Coshocton seeks volunteers for tree planting

A $1 million USDA grant will support planting 200 trees a year in low- to moderate-income neighborhoods, with the first session planned in July

For the next three years, the goal of this grant is to plant 200 trees per year. For this year there will be four planting sessions of 50 trees. Right now plantings are planned for July, August, September and October.

In 2025 the City of Coshocton received a Forest Service Grant through the United States Department of Agriculture. The purpose of the grant involves planting, inventorying, cutting down diseased trees and stump removals in the low- to moderate-income areas of the city. Coshocton’s grant was approved in the amount of $1 million.

This is an opportunity to be part of something that will be seen throughout Coshocton. The city needs volunteers to help plant trees.

Members of the tree commission will head four groups. Each will plant 12-13 trees. There will be a training session prior to the first planting session. The training session will explain the basics of planting trees, filling in the holes, proper staking of trees, mulching, cleanup and watering. There also will be refreshments, samples of equipment and T-shirts handed out.

At the end of the 2026 planting season, there will be an appreciation banquet recognizing volunteers and the areas that were planted in 2026. The first planting will occur sometime in July. Date, time and location will be announced prior to the planting date. The only tools needed to bring are gloves.
