Coshocton health officials urge flu vaccinations as season begins
Health district reminds residents that annual flu shots protect against severe illness and help safeguard vulnerable community members.
The Coshocton Public Health District is encouraging everyone age 6 months and older to get their annual flu vaccination as flu season begins to take hold across Ohio.
Each year thousands are hospitalized due to influenza, and many of those illnesses could be prevented through vaccination.
“Getting the flu vaccine can protect you and those around you,” said Tammy Smith, director of nursing at the health district. “Flu can be serious, particularly for older adults, young children, pregnant individuals, and those with chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease. Vaccination reduces your risk for illness, hospitalization and severe complications.”
Health officials recommend getting a flu shot every year because protection from the vaccine decreases over time and the flu viruses change from season to season.
The Centers for Disease Control advises getting vaccinated by the end of October, though shots are beneficial anytime during flu season.
Flu shots are available at the Coshocton Public Health District and through local health care providers and pharmacies. Most insurance plans cover the cost of vaccination, and some clinics offer reduced-cost options.
Coshocton Public Health District Medical Director Dr. Virostko said, “Now is the time to get a flu shot, before the flu is widespread in the community. Getting your vaccine now will let your immune system have time to prepare to prevent illness. Preventing illness is always better. Don’t wait.”
