Community monitoring shows rise in influenza activity in Coshocton

Ohio Department of Health data from wastewater monitoring indicates influenza levels are increasing while COVID-19 remains high and RSV stays low.

Community-level monitoring conducted at the Coshocton Waste Treatment Facility indicated an increase in influenza viral activity, according to recent data shared by the Ohio Department of Health.

The latest monitoring results show influenza viral levels are increasing and currently classified as high. SARS-CoV-2 levels are stable and remain high while RSV virus levels are low at this time.

This monitoring approach analyzes untreated influent at treatment facilities to track respiratory viruses circulating in the community. Changes in viral concentrations detected through this method often occur before increases in reported cases or hospitalizations.

“Monitoring trends at the community level helps us understand what may be circulating before people begin seeking care,” Director of Nursing Tammy Smith said. “This information allows health care providers to prepare and reinforces the importance of preventive steps such as vaccination and staying home when ill.”

Residents are encouraged to stay up to date on recommended vaccinations, practice regular handwashing, cover coughs and sneezes, stay home when experiencing symptoms of respiratory illness, and seek medical care if symptoms worsen or become severe. These steps can help reduce the spread of respiratory viruses and protect individuals at higher risk for complications.
