The helmet of salvation

The past couple of weeks we have been looking at Ephesians 6:10-20 and talking about the Armor of God. We have looked at the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the sandals of peace, the shield of faith and how each piece of armor is vital for the Christian warrior. Today we are going to look at the helmet of salvation. For the ancient warriors, the helmet was the most important piece of armor that the warrior wore as it protected their head in battle, which was often exposed in the fight for the warrior to see. The helmet would give the warrior confidence to keep their head above their shield so that they could keep their eyes fixed on the fight ahead of them and not hidden behind their shield. Thus, for the ancient warrior, the helmet was extremely important for protection and confidence. It is the same for the Christian warrior.

For the Christian warrior, the knowledge of salvation gives us protection and confidence. The protection comes from knowing that no matter what happens, God has us. If we fall in the fight against the evil one, God has already prepared a place for us, a place that has no sin or pain. We walk knowing that the evil one has no power because Christ has already prepared a place for us in his Father’s house. Secondly, the helmet of salvation provides the Christian warrior with confidence because we know that Christ has already won the battle. Death, the most powerful weapon the evil one has, has already been defeated and holds no power over the Christian warrior. These two things help the Christian warrior stay focused on the fight ahead of us as we are confident that Christ covers our weakness with his protection and gives us confidence to follow him.

So, I leave you with a couple of questions: “Have you put on your helmet of salvation?” Are you able to walk boldly into the battles Christ is calling you into knowing your salvation covers your weakness? Do you have confidence that Christ is in control no matter what is happening?
