Carrollton Garden Club continues decades-long tradition of decorating McCook House

FPS archives highlight community milestones, local achievements and holiday memories spanning 60 years

60 YEARS AGO 

From 1965 FPS Files 

Gov. James A. Rhodes announced the appointment of Karl R. Merrick of Dellroy as oil and gas well inspector in the counties of Carroll, Stark, Portage, Geauga, Lake, Ashtabula, Trumbull, Mahoning, Columbiana, Jefferson and Harrison. 

Debbie Fortney of Dellroy took advantage of Girl Scouting opportunities, earning 16 badges at the age of 11. 

Members of the 1965-66 basketball team, coached by William LoPresti at Carrollton High School, included Marion Noble, Dan Stout, Mike Coffy, Larry Karns, Pat Herron, Denny Chaddock, Bill Hemming, Scott McClester, Bill Fawcett, Roger Sickles, Eric Grunder, Chuck Hutchison, Dennis Moyer, Jerry Mills and Larry Ray, manager. 

50 YEARS AGO

The Malvern Area Bicentennial Commission was completing several projects in conjunction with the nation’s 200th July 4 three-day anniversary. 

George Tidrick of Sherrodsville resigned as chairman of the annual Algonquin Mill Fall Festival, having served since the festival began in 1971. 

Carrollton’s defending Senate League champion basketball team, coached by Paul Drotovick, included Lanny Peterson, Eric Mills, Mark Householder, Eric Cole, Jeff Lucas, Mike Henry, Bill Fiscus, Jack Cole, Ed Clark, Steve Shotwell and Barry Jacobs. 

40 YEARS AGO

A flip of the coin by Raymond H. Roof, chairman of the Carroll County Board of Elections, resulted in Charles R. Devine being declared the winner of the tie-place for the second seat on the Rose Twp. Board of Trustees, where Earl E. Dilley and Devine each tallied 136 votes. 

Dr. Carl A. Lincke, a prominent and longtime Carrollton physician, died at the age of 79. 

Members of Carrollton High School’s reserve girls basketball team included Melissa Dallas, Shurina Smith, Wendy Shawver, Anjie Carter, Wendy Haun, Lori Thornton, Brenda Spicer, Sandy Slates, Meryl DeFeo and Shauna Grabner. 

30 YEARS AGO 

From 1995 FPS Files 

The debut concert of the newly formed Carroll County Chorale, under the direction of Mindy (Davis) Domer, was set for Dec. 1 at the Bell-Herron Middle School gym. 

A float featuring handmade reindeer received the Best Community Service Organization award in Carrollton’s 1995 Christmas parade in which Harold (Pete) Rutledge served as grand marshal with his wife, Maxine, who rode in an antique car driven by Margaret Mesler. 

The returning lettermen on the 1995-96 Carrollton Warrior boys basketball team were Chris Mellott, Matt Furbee, Jason Lindenbaum, Adam Arbogast and Kenny Barkan.

Carrollton Garden Club members Ann Saltsman and Sonny Swartz were pictured putting the finishing touches on one of 16 trees featured in the Festival of Trees at the McCook House. 

Tricia Hanna and Mike Nuzzolillo, both Carrollton High School graduates, were among members of the Ohio University Marching 110 band marching in the 2005 70th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. 

Tammy Sanderson was honored as Woman of the Year by the Carrollton Business Women. 

Kevin Barnett, who was Carrollton’s cross country team captain, was voted junior class prince for Hiram College’s homecoming football game.

Dr. John Walters, longtime Carrollton veterinarian, was named grand marshal of Carrollton’s 2015 Christmas parade. 

Ali Poole scored 23 points as the Carrollton Lady Warriors won their season opener 61-30 over Claymont, while Mikayla Poole scored 18 points. 

Don Rutledge, associate editor of The Free Press Standard, was one of two media representatives named to the Ohio School Boards Association 2015 Media Honor Roll.
