Donald E. Leggett II, 56, of Perrysville, has announced his candidacy for re-election for the term beginning Jan. 1, 2027, in the May 5 primary election for Carroll County commissioner.
A lifelong member of the community, Leggett is the owner of Leggett Auto Service, which he has operated since 1995.
“For more than 30 years, I’ve worked hard to earn the trust of the people I serve by being honest, dependable and fair. Running a small business has taught me the value of hard work, careful budgeting and putting people first,” Leggett said.
“In addition to my business, I had the honor of serving as an elected Perry Township trustee for 25 years. During that time, I worked closely with residents to meet local needs, manage resources responsibly and make practical decisions that helped our community. That experience gave me a strong understanding of local government and the importance of transparency and accountability,” he said.
“Carroll County isn’t just where I work — it’s home. It’s where my wife, Becky, and I raised our five children and where we now enjoy spending time with our 11 grandchildren. I care deeply about our community and its future,” he said.
“When elected county commissioner in 2022, I was given responsibility for county building maintenance and grounds. Over the past three years, I’ve worked to improve safety, reduce liability and protect taxpayer investments in our courthouse and other county properties.
“In the spring of 2022, the sidewalks around the courthouse were replaced to remove trip hazards and improve safety. Inside the building, the second-floor foyer tile was replaced to correct a safety concern for employees and visitors,” Leggett said.
“I am currently leading a project to replace aging windows on the third floor of the courthouse that have been causing water leaks. By fixing the problem now, we are preventing further damage and avoiding more expensive repairs down the road.
“I also addressed a major safety issue at the county home by having abandoned sewer pits cleaned out and properly filled in. These pits posed a serious risk, and taking care of them removed a significant liability,” he said.
“Saving taxpayer money has also been a priority. By bringing snow and ice removal in-house instead of outsourcing it, the county now saves thousands of dollars each year.
“I worked to move several county offices into the Carroll County Annex building to cut costs. Relocating the OSU Extension Office to the annex eliminated about $15,000 per year in rent,” Leggett said.
“Moving outsourced storage into the annex saves an additional $20,000 annually. These changes will continue saving taxpayer dollars year after year. All of these projects were completed without taking on new debt,” he said.
“These are just some of the things I’ve worked on over the past three years. I’ve truly appreciated the opportunity to serve and to make improvements that protect both our community and your tax dollars. I will continue looking for practical ways to save money, improve safety and keep Carroll County a great place to live and raise a family. I would greatly appreciate your vote on May 5,” Leggett said.
