CHIP program brings $1 million for Wayne County home repairs

Federal funding will support housing repairs, renovations and down-payment assistance across the county

The City of Wooster and its partners secured $1,050,000 in federal CHIP funding to provide forgivable loans and grants for home repairs, renovations and down-payment assistance across Wayne County.

Homeownership has long been a cornerstone of the American Dream, yet rising maintenance costs and high barriers to entry often make it out of reach. The City of Wooster and Community Housing Impact and Preservation (CHIP) program is bringing over $1 million in federal funding to Wayne County to support home repairs, renovations and down-payment assistance.

The funding is the result of a strategic partnership between the City of Wooster, the City of Orrville, Wayne County and the Wayne Metropolitan Housing Authority. Together, these entities secured $1,050,000 in federal CDBG and HOME funds to provide grants and 100% forgivable loans to eligible participants. The program is made possible in partnership with the Ohio Department of Development, with the City of Wooster serving as the grantee for all of Wayne County.

Because the CHIP program is highly competitive, this award represents a significant opportunity for Wayne County residents to invest in their homes without the burden of traditional debt. In addition to helping homeowners in need with critical safety repairs, including roofing, electrical, plumbing and septic work, the program revitalizes local neighborhoods and strengthens the community’s overall property values, helping keep taxes low for all residents.

Those struggling with a housing repair issue are encouraged to contact Tanya Sargeant, CHIP administrator at Wayne Metropolitan Housing Authority, at 330-264-2727, ext. 139. The WMHA team will guide applicants through the process and help identify qualified contractors to bring homes up to code.
