The Wooster Chamber Music Series will present the SPA Trio, featuring mezzo-soprano, viola and piano, in concert April 26 at the Scheide Music Center.

The Wooster Chamber Music Series will present the SPA Trio in concert at 3 p.m. April 26 at the Scheide Music Center on The College of Wooster campus.

The ensemble features mezzo-soprano, viola and piano. While this is not a common combination in chamber music, there is a long tradition of great singers performing salon-type songs with an obbligato instrument: Enrico Caruso with Mischa Elman, Marian Anderson with William Primrose, even Bing Crosby and Jascha Heifetz. Since 2011, the artists known as the SPA Trio have continued this tradition.

Mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano is a veteran orchestral, opera and chamber music performer. Her resume includes appearances with the Cleveland Orchestra, Chicago Symphony and Los Angeles and New York Philharmonics, as well as more than 100 performances with the Metropolitan Opera. The trio also includes former principal violist of the New York Philharmonic and two-time Grammy nominee Paul Neubauer, as well as accomplished solo and collaborative pianist Anne-Marie McDermott. Their program will include 19th- and 20th-century art and parlor songs, including works by Brahms, Wagner and Schumann.

Tickets are $25 for general admission. Middle school, high school and College of Wooster students are admitted for free. All concerts are on Sunday afternoons at 3 p.m. and take place in Gault Recital Hall, Scheide Music Center at The College of Wooster, 525 E. University St., Wooster.
