‘The Chosen’ extras to share behind-the-scenes stories at Medina parish event
Deacon William and Liz Yoho, who have appeared in four seasons of the hit series, will speak Sept. 11 at St. Francis Xavier Parish in Medina.
Deacon William Yoho and his wife, Liz, have spent the past several years stepping into the world of The Chosen, a multi-season series dramatizing the life and ministry of Jesus. The couple has served as extras in four seasons of the popular crowd-funded show, most recently returning from filming Season 6 in Texas.
On Thursday, Sept. 11, the Yohos will bring their behind-the-scenes stories to St. Francis Xavier Parish, 606 E. Washington St., Medina. The free event begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Xavier Room inside St. Francis Xavier School. Registration is encouraged at sfxmedina.com/parish/meet-the-extras.
Jennifer Webb, director of ministries and communication at St. Francis Xavier, said the series has resonated with many Catholics because of its attention to detail and its creative approach to imagining Scripture.
“Basically, they take the Scripture stories and imagine the sights, sounds, smells, full character development, everything that leads to those stories,” Webb said. “It’s actually a very Ignatian way of praying, where you put yourself into the scene and wonder about the story.”
She noted that The Chosen has included perspectives from Catholics and messianic Jews in its production, with an aim to present a broad Christian viewpoint. “So many church movies or shows are done with good intentions but really aren’t that well done—but this one is,” Webb said. “We love it.”
Webb added that many parishioners have been watching the series together on Wednesday mornings, and she hopes the evening program with the Yohos will draw even more fans, including those from outside the parish.
“Jonathan Roumie, who plays Jesus, is actually a very faithful Catholic himself,” Webb said, adding that local ties extend to actress Liz Tabish, who portrays Mary Magdalene and is married to Stan Meyer, whose family is from Medina.
Season 5 of The Chosen has not yet been released, but Webb said anticipation is growing for Season 6, which will depict the passion and crucifixion of Jesus.
