Sometimes a little change makes a big impact. That’s what patrons will find at the Buckeye, Brunswick and Medina libraries on their next visit.
This fall, the Medina County District Library's Buckeye branch installed a new feature wall highlighting the book "The Little Engine That Could" and new book bins that are lower to the ground, allowing the youngest patrons to choose their own books. "The Little Engine That Could" is the first book every child enrolled in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library receives in the mail, so it’s sure to be a favorite of many Medina County kids.
“Trains are a favorite with kids of all ages. Oftentimes, when kids hear the train whistle in the Buckeye Library, they run to the windows to watch the train go by. Having a train decorate the wall in the children's space with the quote, ‘I think I can, I think I can, I think I can,’ from 'The Little Engine That Could' by Watty Piper couples a popular children's theme with a positive affirmation, seamlessly matching the space with those who use it most,” says Laura Kettering, Buckeye Library manager.

In early December, Brunswick Library installed a Baby Garden. The area is enclosed, with comfortable seating for adults, and provides babies and toddlers a safe space to play under direct supervision. Inside are toys, a mirror in which babies can admire their reflections and more. Soft flooring inside the corralled area helps prevent bumps as little ones crawl, pull up and take their first steps.
“Our baby storytimes grew this year to exceed 2,000 attendees. We needed a space for babies and those learning to walk to be safe with age-appropriate toys. So, the Baby Garden was born! We purchased furniture, toys and foam mats that are easy to clean for our smallest — and arguably most important – patrons,” says Kelly Halleen, children’s department supervisor.

At Medina Library, the Children’s Department upgraded a study room into a Sensory Study Room thanks to donations in memory of Michael Phillipp, a 19-year-old Medina man who died in June 2025. Michael visited the library often and thrived on the autism spectrum; his talents included art, creating his own comic books and playing video games.

The Sensory Study Room is inclusive and can still be used for studying and tutoring, along with its new sensory activities.
“I hope by providing alternative seating, lighting and other sensory-friendly elements, everyone can feel comfortable spending time at the library. The Children's Department is very grateful for the donations that allowed us to create this space,” says Jennifer Sveda, children’s department supervisor.
“Sensory awareness has always been a major part of our lives. Michael was excluded from countless activities due to his sensory sensitivities, so it is wonderful to see that kids with the same type of issues will have those needs met and can be included,” says Mark Phillipp, Michael’s father.
MCDL Community Engagement Director Tina Sabol added, “This has been a slow rollout, but it’s all done and we love it. These are such great additions to the Buckeye, Brunswick and Medina libraries, and it was all either donated or accomplished on a very slim budget — but with a big impact.”
