Yoder, Frey spark Garaway’s 50-7 rout of Tusky Valley

Pirates dominate behind balanced offense; cross country, volleyball teams post strong showings at IVC meets and tournaments.

Kenya Njoroge and the Garaway volleyball team opened the postseason tournament with a win over Fort Frye on Oct. 14.

Garaway rolled to a 50-7 win over Tusky Valley in Inter-Valley Conference football play on Oct. 10.

Micah Yoder caught three touchdown passes from Grady Miller to help the Pirates (6-2, 2-1) take a 36-0 halftime lead. Yoder finished the game with five catches for 44 yards.

Matthew Frey rushed for a game-high 157 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries, adding a 27-yard touchdown catch. Seth Schie caught a 16-yard touchdown pass while Colson Kuemerle caught five passes for a game-high 93 yards. Miller finished 15-of-17 passing for 202 yards and four touchdowns while Christian Raber finished 2-of-2 passing for 17 yards and one score.

Jaxon Garber intercepted a pass to lead the defense. Colson Keller and Braylon Books had a sack.

Boys cross country

Garaway finished second at the IVC Meet on Oct. 11.

Nic Palmer finished first out of 58 runners in 16:38.78 to lead the Pirates. Carter Travis finished third in 16:49.13, Dominic Schlabach fifth in 17:25.33, Aaron Asbury 23rd in 18:42.41 and Bryce Johnson 29th in 19:01.62 to round out the scoring.

Volleyball

Garaway picked up a win over Fort Frye in a Division VI sectional semifinal on Oct. 14.

Audrey Miller (30 digs, 26 kills, four aces), Charlee Yoder (53 assists, 10 digs, three aces), Quinn Schwartz (16 kills, three blocks, three aces), True Tango (19 digs, seven kills, three aces), Kenya Njoroge (17 digs) and Gina Beachy (13 digs) led the Lady Pirates.

Garaway defeated Conotton Valley 25-21, 23-25, 25-22 in the IVC Showcase on Oct. 11.

Miller (16 kills, 16 digs, three aces, two blocks), Yoder (42 assists, 10 digs, two aces), Schwartz (13 kills, two aces), Tango (10 kills, 10 digs) and Sami Garber (two blocks) paced the Lady Pirates.

Garaway picked up a 25-15, 25-19, 25-10 win over Ridgewood in IVC play on Oct. 8.

Miller (10 kills, 10 digs, five aces), Yoder (30 assists, five digs, two aces), Schwartz (six kills, four aces), Tango (nine kills, five digs) and Kyleigh LaCroix (five kills) led the Lady Pirates.

Girls cross country

Garaway competed at the IVC Meet on Oct. 11.

Laynee Reneker finished 21st in 22:35.79 to pace the Lady Pirates. Lydia Raber finished 27th in 23:19.51 and Rebecca Yoder 29th in 23:27.75.
