From 1961 FPS Files

Atty. J. Lee Pickering of Minerva, a World War I veteran and active in American Legion and veterans’ affairs, delivered the dedicatory speech for the dedication of the Veterans Memorial at Carrollton’s Westview Cemetery.

Kenneth (Fat) Abrahims of Carrollton, sports editor for The FPS, died of a heart attack at age 54.

Death also claimed the life Roderick (Roddy) McDonald, who was the Carroll County Recorder from 1937 until his retirement in 1960.

Miss Alice Ann McClain of Marion – Miss Ohio of 1960 – was a guest at the Carrollton Chamber of Commerce banquet held at Atwood Yacht Club. The banquet was a combined salute to industry and heralding the conversion to dial system by General Telephone Co.

The grandstand at the Carroll County fairgrounds was nearly filled with over 3,000 parents, relatives, and friends of the 220 graduating members of the class of 1971.

Roger McLoney and James Madison served as buglers for four area Memorial Day services at Westview Cemetery in Carrollton and cemeteries at Harlem Springs, Scroggsfield and Mechanicstown.

Filling Carroll County’s Induction Call No. 254 for June into the Armed Services were Richard L. Geiser, William D. Burns and Raymond Trussel.

Marcus Neiman was named the new band director at Malvern High School, succeeding Dan Swanger.

Mrs. Elizabeth Boring of Carrollton was appointed the county’s new Welfare Director, succeeding Robert W. Tasker, who held the position since 1956 and retired.

Sara Lindamood was honored by the Kilgore Junior Women’s Club as their “Woman of the Year.”

Bill Clark of Carrollton was featured as The Free Press Standard’s “This Week in the Kitchen” series.

The Carrollton Warriors won their first Senate League baseball title in a 4-3 win over Claymont.

30 YEARS AGO

Orations were given at Carrollton High School’s 1991 graduation exercises by Roman Capper, Gretchen Long, Jennifer Lowdermilk and Kirk Keifer.

The Carrollton First United Methodist Church purchased the building formerly occupied by New Wine Covenant Church on McCook Ave. for a youth center.

Trisha Stackhouse, a 1991 graduate of Carrollton High School, received the National Choral Award during the school’s choral music department concert.

The five Carrollton High School athletes who received Special Awards for their performances on the 1991 varsity track team included Jamey Gamble, Chris Lovas, Chris Lattin, Kevin Moore and Todd Hawk.

Mike Curry, Malia Miller and Bethany Frew left for Oklahoma City to compete in the National Speech
tournament.
