Hot bats power West Holmes to pair of softball wins

Knights collect 19 hits vs. Marion Harding, top Waynedale behind Cline’s strong outing

Briar Cline had her fingerprints all over the Lady Knights' two wins last week. She fired nine strikeouts and allowed just five hits in a win over Waynedale, then had a hot bat in a blowout win over Marion Harding, hammering out four hits while driving in four runs.

The West Holmes softball team defeated Waynedale 8-3 in a nonleague clash April 13.

Zalina Proper (two RBIs) and Zoe Walter each had three hits, while Gabby Fowler went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Briar Cline earned the complete-game win in the circle, allowing three runs on five hits with nine strikeouts and one walk.

West Holmes defeated Marion Harding 20-5 in nonleague play April 11 behind a strong offensive performance.

Cline had four hits and four RBIs, while the team totaled 19 hits. Fowler (four RBIs), Proper, Mari Patterson and Emma Miller each had multiple hits. Proper and Walter each had multiple stolen bases, and the Knights finished with seven stolen bases overall. Fowler earned the win in the circle, allowing five runs on five hits over four innings with three strikeouts and two walks, and Mattie Shankel pitched one scoreless inning in relief.

West Holmes fell to Lexington 14-11 in an Ohio Cardinal Conference battle April 8.

Fowler and Payson Dial each had three hits, while Fowler, Trinity Ramseyer and Dial each drove in two runs. Patterson and Miller each added multiple hits. Fowler pitched four innings in relief, allowing eight runs (six earned) on nine hits with two strikeouts and two walks, while Cline took the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) on five hits over three innings with two strikeouts and four walks.

West Holmes defeated Lexington 13-2 in OCC play April 7.

Cline hit two home runs and drove in three runs to lead WH. Miller went 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Cline and Dial each had three hits. Proper and Payton Hudson each had multiple hits, with Proper driving in two runs and stealing three bases. Fowler earned the win in the circle, allowing two runs on five hits over seven innings with three strikeouts and two walks.

Girls track & field

West Holmes lost 73-51 to New Philadelphia in an OCC dual April 14.

Mallory Marmet won the shot put at 32-4 and the discus at 103-2 to lead WH. Breslyn Brown won the 200 in 29.28 and the 400 in 1:03.34 while finishing third in the 100. Katherine Kaster won the 800 and finished second in the 400. Ellie Babitt won the 1,600 and finished third in the 800. Saige Krownapple threw a personal-best 80-5 in the discus to finish second. McKaylin Getchey jumped a season-best 4-10 to garner second in the high jump. Serenity McClintock finished second in the 1600. Sophie Arnold finished second in the 800. Rowan Holasek finished third in the shot and the discus (72-5). Lilli Brown finished third in the 100 hurdles. Alizah Sigler finished third in the 200.

West Holmes hosted the Knights Invitational April 11, finishing sixth out of 10 teams.

Marmet led the Knights, earning Most Field Points MVP by winning the discus and finishing second in the shot put. Kaster outkicked her opponent in the final 150 meters to win the 3,200 while finishing second in the 1,600.

West Holmes competed at the Joe Kasper Invitational April 4.

The Knights were led by Arnold, who finished third in the 3,200, along with Babbit, who was fourth in the 3,200. Kaster finished fourth in the 800 and fifth in the 1,600. Getchey was seventh in the high jump, while Brown finished eighth. The 4x800 relay of Arnold, Babbit, Chelsie Cooper and McClintock finished seventh, while the 4x400 relay of Kaster, Cooper, Brooklyn Hustak and Sigler finished eighth.

Boys track & field

West Holmes fell 88-34 to New Philadelphia in an OCC dual April 14.

Maddax Graham led the way with lifetime personal bests in the shot put and discus, throwing the shot 52-8 and the discus 161-3, moving up on the all-time school best lists in both throwing events. Mac Craft won the 200 and finished second in the 100. Parker Garver won the 400. The 4x400 relay of Garver, Cole Troyer, Jimmy Wengerd and Marshall Yoder finished first in 3:51.08. Rhett Chaney jumped 20-6 in the long jump to finish second. Garrett Obrst finished third in the 200 and the high jump. Yoder finished third in the 300 hurdles.

Graham led WH, earning Most Field Points MVP with a sweep of the shot put and discus titles. His winning throw of 154-3 in the discus improved on the previous week’s mark.

The 4x200 relay of Yoder, Obrst, Cody Gallion and Craft finished first in 1:34.46. Chaney won the long jump with a jump of 20-3¼.

Graham won the discus with a personal-best 152-0 and was second in the shot put at 48-8 to pace the Knights. The 4x200 squad of Yoder, Obrst, Gallion and Craft improved by more than four seconds from the previous week’s effort, finishing third in 1:34.28. Craft finished fifth in the 200 and eighth in the 100, while Obrst finished seventh in the 200. Yoder finished sixth in the 300 hurdles. Charlie Cooper had a personal best in the discus of 126-4 to finish eighth. The 4x100 relay team of Brady Carter, Troyer, Obrst and Seth Lowe finished eighth with a two-second improvement from the previous week.
