Hiland boys soccer claims sectional crown with dominant 9-0 victory
Hawks advance in postseason; volleyball and girls soccer notch strong wins as cross country wraps up IVC competition.

The Hiland boys soccer team rolled to a 9-0 win over Caldwell in a Division V sectional final on Oct. 14. The game was stopped at halftime by the OHSAA mercy rule.
Chase Coblentz led the Hawks with two goals. Max Jones, Isaac Thomas (assist), Josh Yoder, Perrin Miller (assist), Cam Yoder, Roman Tkachuk and Juan Gomez (assist) all scored once. Bodie Gertz had two assists while Ryan Baird, Quinn Mullet and Joel Leinbach had one assist.
“Good opening tournament game for us,” Hiland coach Scott Bodiker said. “No one got injured, and we got to play everyone. We are dealing with a few injuries, so we have a week to heal and get prepared for our longtime nemesis Rosecrans.”
Hiland played Central Christian to a 0-0 draw on Oct. 10.
Hawks goalkeeper Chase Coblentz recorded one save.
“We played great tonight,” coach Bodiker said. “We forced Central out of what they like to do and made them play very defensively. They are a very good defensive team, and unfortunately, in the end, even though we had the overwhelming majority of the possession and chances, we just couldn't find the net.”
Volleyball
Hiland beat Strasburg-Franklin 25-11, 25-17, 25-16 in the Inter-Valley Conference Showcase on April 11.
Addi Mast (11 kills, 10 digs, two blocks), Brianna Mishler (18 assists, four aces), Alayna Yoder (eight kills, five aces), Claire Detweiller (six kills, nine aces) and Karli Schrock (five kills, four blocks) paced the Lady Hawks.
Hiland defeated Tusky Valley 25-19, 25-16, 25-21 in an IVC clash on Oct. 8.
Mast (19 kills, 12 digs), Detweiler (nine kills, six digs, four aces), Schrock (seven kills, two blocks), Yoder (six kills) and Olivia Miller (13 digs) led the Lady Hawks.
Girls soccer
Hiland defeated Triway 3-0 on Oct. 11.
Chanelle Kellogg, Gabby Mullet and Zoe Miller all scored for the Lady Hawks. Italee Mullet had two assists, and Ally Mullet had one.
“(It was a) great way to end the regular season,” Hiland coach Conner Lee said. “On to (the) tournament.”
Hiland picked up a 4-0 win over Smithville on Oct. 9.
Kellogg, Gabby Mullet, Kaylin Thomas and Minka Mullet all scored for the Lady Hawks. Italee Mullet had two assists while Ally Mullet and Claire Mullet had one assist.
“(It was a) good effort tonight,” Lee said. “(I was) glad to get a shutout after a long stretch.”
Boys cross country
Hiland competed at the IVC Meet on Oct. 11.
Landon Troyer finished 14th in 18:05.79 to lead the Hawks. Jake Troyer finished 40th in 19:59.30 and Jordan Scott 48th in 21:50.66.
