Hiland baseball delivers at plate, mound
Hawks earn wins over FCA, Garaway but fall to Waynedale
The Hiland baseball team used a fast start and balanced offense to power past Fairfield Christian Academy 14-8 in nonleague play April 18.
The Hawks plated six runs in the first inning and never looked back, adding runs in the next three frames to build a 14-6 lead. Hiland finished with 13 hits and took advantage of four walks to keep pressure on the Knights throughout.
Christian Mullet led the charge at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs and three stolen bases. Jonah Yoder added a big day, finishing 2-for-4 with a home run, three runs scored and an RBI, while Carson Yoder went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and three RBIs.
Paxton Alarcon contributed a 2-for-3 effort with two RBIs, and Isaiah Wagler scored three runs while reaching base three times. Andre Yoder and Grady Monigold drove in two runs.
On the mound, Jonah Yoder earned the win in relief, allowing two runs over three innings with two strikeouts. Mullet closed things out, tossing two innings and striking out three.
In a battle of defending state champions, Hiland came up short in a 5-3 loss to Waynedale in nonleague action April 17.
The Hawks finished with six hits, led by Mullet and Gerut Monigold, who each had two hits at the plate. Mullet also scored two runs. Michael Miller and Jonah Yoder each added an RBI.
Hiland trailed 5-1 before scoring twice in the seventh inning, but the rally fell short.
On the mound, Gerut Monigold took the loss, allowing five runs (two earned) over 4 1/3 innings. Damon Troyer provided 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, striking out two.
Hiland picked up a 7-0 win over Garaway in Inter-Valley Conference play April 15.
Miller tossed a one-hit shutout, striking out 12 and allowing just one walk over seven innings.
At the plate, Hiland totaled 11 hits, led by Jonah Yoder with three hits and three RBIs. Gerut Monigold chipped in two doubles and an RBI, Alarcon added two hits and an RBI, and Mullet scored two runs.
Boys tennis
Hiland picked up a 4-1 win over Cambridge in nonleague play April 21.
Vlad Horkovchuk won 6-3, 6-3 at second singles, while Noah Troyer won 6-3, 6-0 at third singles. The first doubles team of Clay Lehman and Quinn Mullet won 6-3, 6-3, while the second doubles tandem of Max Jones and Ryan Baird won 6-1, 6-1.
Hiland suffered a 4-1 loss to Central Christian in NET action April 20.
