Robyn Peterson of Lake Primary School was named Stark County Art Educator of the Year for her impact on students through creativity, confidence and connection.

Peterson was one of three finalists featured in a previous Hartville News article and was selected as this year’s top art educator.

In her classroom, art is more than a subject – it is a safe space where creativity, patience and self-expression are nurtured. Peterson emphasizes that every child is an artist, encouraging students to take risks, try new techniques and view mistakes as part of the creative process.

Through her calm approach and patience, students build confidence and develop an appreciation for art. Her work also extends beyond artistic skills, as she helps students process emotions and navigate difficult life experiences through creative expression.

Lake Local Schools noted that Peterson “exemplifies what it means to educate the whole child,” creating an environment where students feel valued and supported.

Peterson’s influence extends beyond the classroom. Her artwork is displayed at Art from the Hart Studio in downtown Hartville, where she also teaches students. Community members have praised both her artistic insight and her connection with young learners.

Her work, along with that of other finalists, is featured in the Art Educator of the Year Exhibition at the Massillon Museum and the Canton Museum of Art through April 19.

Also recognized at the event was Doug Beery of North Canton City Schools, who was named the 2026 Stark County Music Educator of the Year.

Beery, director of choral activities at Hoover High School, has more than 25 years of teaching experience and leads choral ensembles that have performed across Ohio, the United States and Europe. He also serves as conductor of the Canton Symphony Orchestra Chorus.

“I wanted to make music instruction my job to pass on the music educational experience that was so transformational for me,” Beery said.

Together, Peterson and Beery were honored for their commitment to arts education and their lasting impact on students and the broader community.
