It was not the start the Dukes were looking for as they hosted Louisville in a non-conference contest Sept. 12. And it certainly wasn’t the ending, either.

The Leopards’ Owen DiMarzio returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown to begin the contest, but Marlington weathered that squall as the Dukes appeared ready to go toe-to-toe with Louisville. On second-and-20 from Marlington’s 36-yard line, freshman quarterback Tyler Walder connected with receiver Cole Jones, who hauled in the pass near the left sideline and raced for a 36-yard touchdown and a 7-7 tie.

That was it for the Dukes, however, as Louisville (4-0) poured it on, scoring 31 unanswered points in the second and third quarters for a convincing 45-7 win.

Walder was composed in the pocket for Marlington (2-2), completing 14 of 22 passes for 194 yards, the touchdown and two interceptions. Jones broke the century mark, picking up 109 yards on six catches, while Bryce Jones added 59 yards on three receptions.

On the ground, Jacob Rose led the Dukes with 56 yards on only six touches, and Walder accounted for 22 yards on four attempts. Conspicuously absent from the offensive stats was Cameron Evanich, who totaled just three catches for one yard. However, the junior made his presence felt on defense as he led Marlington with nine tackles.

The Dukes will have an extra day off this week as they next travel to Warren to take on John F. Kennedy on Saturday, Sept. 20.

The Lady Dukes continued rolling as they picked up three more wins to run their streak to eight matches. First was a home meeting against Alliance in an Eastern Buckeye Conference matchup Sept. 9, won by Marlington 3-0 (25-5, 25-16, 25-10).

Freshman Chloe Evanich led the Dukes with seven kills, while juniors Danica Sarchione and Justine Doringo chipped in six apiece. Sarchione also added eight serving aces, and Marisa Casto contributed seven. Senior Cali Young led Marlington with 16 assists.

The Dukes stayed at home and in the EBC on Sept. 11, welcoming Carrollton. Marlington didn’t get the sweep, but still won 3-1 (25-22, 25-20, 23-25, 25-17). Sarchione had a huge game at the net, collecting 23 kills, 15 digs and five aces. Young dished out 39 assists, and Giana Bogunovich led in serving with six aces.

Marlington wrapped up its week with another 3-1 victory Sept. 13 at Lake, winning 25-17, 25-21, 25-27, 25-22. Sarchione led the Dukes (9-2, 6-0) with 21 kills, 14 digs and five blocks, and Young finished with 37 assists.
