Marlboro Township receives $8,916 OPWC grant
Reimbursement supports Osborne Avenue paving; trustees approve $47,000 in bills.
On Jan 19, Fiscal Officer Tracy Ferrett reported the township received reimbursement from the Ohio Public Works Commission under the Osborne Avenue paving project grant totaling $8,916.36. The amount represents 90% of in-kind labor and equipment use for work completed by the road department.
Road Superintendent A.J. Battershell reported the road department has been busy plowing and salting, as well as cleaning up the tree line at the township offices. The department also replaced a filter on the MowerMax, spread stone on Graening Street and Preston Avenue, ordered the final 45 tons of salt under contract, and noted that new rear tires are needed on the Freightliner at an estimated cost of $1,500-2,000.
Battershell said McIntosh Oil has been filling the current gas tank weekly and the department is awaiting delivery of a larger 500-gallon tank from McIntosh Oil. He also requested decals to label the gas and diesel tanks to prevent accidental fueling errors.
Trustee Wayne Schillig reported receiving the annual township highway system mileage certifications for 2025 from the Stark County engineer. The mileage is listed as 38.055 miles, and according to Battershell, there are no changes to report.
Police Chief Ron Devies reported the department received a Continuing Professional Training reimbursement totaling $3,589.79. Devies also said he, Linda Marx and Ferrett met with Visual Edge regarding the copier contract. Under the lease of a new copier, the township will save $50 per month, and Visual Edge waived the $150 one-time documentation fee. Previously, there was no allowance for color copies, which were charged as overages at about 15 cents per copy. The new contract includes allowances for both black-and-white and color copies, with the default set to black-and-white. Overages will be billed at approximately 5 cents per color copy.
Devies also reported that in December 2025 the department responded to 139 calls, made three criminal arrests, issued 14 traffic citations, patrolled 8,026 miles and used 493.6 gallons of gas. For all of 2025, the department patrolled 95,832 miles.
Devies said the department will again need shredding services, and Trustee Ken Eddleman will check on availability.
Trustee John Battershell reported he will have Albright Electric install a new fan on the road garage heater, which is not working properly.
Trustee Eddleman reported he plans to attend a tour of the new crime lab building location being conducted by the mayor of Canton for the Stark Council of Governments.
The trustees approved a motion to pay bills totaling $46,982.45.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, at Marlboro Township Hall.
