After consecutive blowout victories, the Blue Streaks found themselves in a dogfight Sept. 5 against visiting Rocky River. Losing Ty DeGeorge on the opening drive did not help matters.

Davis Matson stepped in and Alex Quior stepped up as Lake, which led 27-7 at halftime, held on for a 34-28 victory to remain perfect on the season.

DeGeorge, who had accounted for 10 touchdowns in the Blue Streaks’ first two wins, went down with a broken ankle on Lake’s opening drive. The drive stalled, but on the next possession, Lake scored on a 5-yard run by Quior. The Blue Streaks added two more scores as Quior connected with Cole Lanterman for a 55-yard touchdown, then Matson ran in from four yards out for a 20-0 second-period lead.

Rocky River’s offense responded with two unanswered third-quarter touchdowns to pull within six. The Pirates looked ready to tie after forcing a Lake punt, but they muffed the return, and Mack Crespo recovered for the Blue Streaks. Two plays later, Quior ran in from eight yards out for a 34-21 lead.

Rocky River (2-1) quickly answered with an 80-yard scoring pass, but Lake’s defense stiffened, forcing back-to-back punts. With 5:42 left, the Blue Streaks (3-0) leaned on Matson, who carried seven straight times to seal the win.

Matson, who returned after missing two weeks following appendix surgery, rushed for 173 yards and two scores on 26 carries. Quior went 12-of-20 for 148 yards with one touchdown pass and added two rushing scores on nine carries for 50 yards.
