@your library: A Thriving Hub for All Ages: The Remarkable Benefits of a Community Center

Published Modified

The Puskarich Public Library continues to find new avenues to provide services to our community. In Scio, a new beacon of health and camaraderie is emerging – a community center that not only serves as a hub for social interactions but also caters to the unique needs of our senior population. As we embrace the aging demographic in our midst, the introduction of senior exercise programs like hosting Silver Sneakers and the increasingly popular pickleball courts are proving to be transformative elements that enrich the lives of residents of all ages.

The Harrison County Health Department utilizes the community center to host their Silver Sneakers on Tuesday mornings. Tailored to address the specific health concerns of seniors, these programs encompass a variety of activities, from gentle yoga and low-impact aerobics to strength training and balance exercises. The benefits are manifold, ranging from enhanced cardiovascular health to improved flexibility and coordination. Regular exercise has been shown to reduce the risk of chronic diseases and promote mental well-being, ensuring that our seniors not only live longer but also enjoy a higher quality of life.

The library operates the beautiful Barr Memorial gymnasium and is always open to suggestions for new activities for local residents. Enter pickleball – the sport that has taken the nation by storm. A cross between tennis, badminton, and ping pong, pickleball is a low impact yet highly engaging activity that has become a favorite among local residents, including our senior athletes. The sport’s smaller court size and slower pace make it accessible to all fitness levels, making it an ideal option for older adults. Pickleball not only promotes physical fitness but also offers a sense of camaraderie and friendly competition. The laughter echoing across the courts is a testament to the joy that this sport brings to our patrons. We have all the equipment, and there is no charge to play.

Pickleball is scheduled 4:30– 7:30 p.m. on Mondays, 9 a.m. until noon on Wednesdays and from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. on Friday evenings. Our annual tournament is held on the Saturday of the Scio Fall Festival. The public is invited to attend and watch our local athletes compete.

The Barr Gymnasium is also home to the Harrison Central Biddy Basketball league. The coaches, players, parents and fans of youth sports were pleased to have this quality facility to hold their practices and league games.

The establishment of a community center featuring senior exercise programs and pickleball courts is a resounding success, bringing about not only physical well-being for our seniors but also fostering a sense of community and shared purpose. As we witness the positive ripple effects, it is clear that such investments in our community’s health and social infrastructure pay dividends far beyond the initial investment. Watch for continued new programs coming for all ages including country line dancing!

While the library still has many books, it truly has something for all including mind, body and soul!
