New Athens was home to Alma Academy

The school became Alma College in 1825, and in 1826 its name was changed to Franklin College

New Athens was home to Alma Academy, organized in 1818. The school became Alma College in 1825, and in 1826 its name was changed to Franklin College.

In 1861, the Civil War depleted the student body, but the college was saved from extinction when women enrolled. The school later closed in 1918 and joined with Muskingum College in New Concord.
