Miss War Bonds of Harrison County, 1942
Fairground contest raised $30,000 for the war effort, showcasing the community’s patriotism and unity during World War II.
A news clipping recently arrived in an envelope with no return address, and I want to thank whoever sent it. The article recalls a patriotic moment from the 1942 Harrison County Fair, held Oct. 7-9, when a contest promoting the sale of War Bonds generated $30,000 for the war effort.
Crowned “Miss War Bonds of Harrison County” was Miss Virginia Metzer of Scio. Also pictured among the winning contestants were Betty Jo Carter, Virginia Walker, Fair Board Chairman L.P. Reese of Scio, and Ruth Lowmiller.
Serving with Reese on the Fair War Bond Committee were William C. Hughes of Scio; Ed Milliken of Bowerston; John Adrian of Germano; James Galbreath of Jewett; and C.C. Henderson and Luther Jones of Cadiz.
This snapshot from the past is a reminder of the spirit of unity and service that defined our communities during World War II.
