Look at the Past: Uncovering Hopedale’s fascinating past

Hopedale Mining Company 1915 operated the first steam shovel to uncover commercial coal. The road from Steubenville to Wills Creek, 1803: Treasurer of the U.S. Albert Gallatin defined it in 1802 and allowed six dollars the mile for the laying out of that which is now Route 22. It was called historically, The Mingo Trail.

Hopedale’s plat was filed in 1851. Cyrus McNeely established his successful Hopedale Normal School. The town was originally known as “Green” and was the center of the Baptist following in our county. Hopedale was the childhood home of notable Clark Gable.
