The View From Here
They’re Coming to Take Me Away
Look at the Past: The Piedmont railroad depot
Picture taken 1912-1913 of the inside of the Piedmont railroad depot.
There is a set of scales on the front desk, so they would be weighing packages to be sent. There is a “potbellied stove” in the right corner, so they would be keeping that going in cold weather. The ceiling light is a kerosene light. There is a telephone between them on the desks. I’m sure folks were calling to see if the train was on time. They would be accepting freight, mail and other deliveries to the station.
The first railroad was the Cleveland Tuscarawas Valley and Wheeling. The first passenger train arrived during the month of February 1880. Later it was the B & O Railroad.
The picture came from Dave and Carla McElhaney Birney of Dover. Carla brough a box of pictures and other items for the historical and genealogical society to make available to patrons.
There are also class pictures from Piedmont and Freeport.
