Look at the Past: History about the Deersville Mill
The land around the Deersville Mill location was originally owned by Chauncey Dewey. The mill lot was sold to Aaron Moore, March 6, 1848, for $32
John Hilton built the mill and operated it until Aug. 9, 1865, when he sold it to Thomas and John McMillen for $2800. With the change to the McMillen’s, their miller was George Crim, and the engineer was Jack Rose. They operated from 1865 to about 1870 when the mill burned.
The burning of the mill was a calamity to the community and there was much interest in it being rebuilt. About 160 subscribers helped get it rebuilt by cash donations, volunteering of time, donations of lumber, shingles, framing and timber.
The old steam engine and boiler was replaced by a diesel engine with an immense flywheel.
The mill was bought and torn down by Milo Wetzel, junk dealer, circa 1934. Information from “History of the Village of Deersville, Ohio 1815-2007”.
