Look at the Past: A look back at Deersville
A snowy day in Deersville (no date on picture).
The first house on the right is today the Hillside Haven Vacation Home owned by Kurt and Laura Peters, the owners of the Deersville General Store. One of the previous owners was Harley Poulson, second owner of the Deersville General Store.
The next house is Hazel’s House, owner Abigail Klamert. This was Abi’s grandmothers’ home and Abigail came to Deersville from Texas to save and restore the family home and today is operated as a vacation home.
The next building past the sleigh is the Deersville General Store, started in 1898. Just beyond that would be the Deersville Creamery Co. (location today of the Deersville Community Theatre) which began business in May 1892. The creamery was sold June 21, 1898, including machinery, tools and implements to the Smithfield Creamery Co. of Smithfield, OH.
In the middle of the picture one can see the Presbyterian Church (bell tower) which was built in 1879. On the hill in the right upper hand corner, one can see the Deersville School. Across from the DGS one can see the steps of the Union Bell Hotel.
Years ago, the Pittis Brothers had a feed store, hotel and rooms in the front for Hucksters to show their wares to the townspeople. Today the Bell family has it as a short-term rental.
Picture from the HCHS information from “History of the Village of Deersville 1815-1952” by Homer C. Poulson.
