Jewett gears up for Community Days event
Jewett Council member Bobbie Prevot spoke with the News-Herald about some of the exciting things happening in Jewett this year for Community Days in July.
“This is the Second Annual Community Days, last year we ran it as a fundraiser and were able to purchase the new Christmas lights, holiday banners, and community Christmas tree for the Village of Jewett,” Prevot shared. She said that this year will be a little different. Many residents said last year that they’d like to see the day become an annual event. So this year, there is much more activity planned. “This year we are adding a 3 on 3 basketball tournament, basket bingo, as well as the kickball and cornhole tournaments. Our car/motorcycle show was a huge success last year so we hope to get a big turnout again this year. We plan to have some fun “old time games” for the kids to play: water balloon toss, maybe a 3-legged race, etc. All ideas are welcome.
“Our kitchen will be serving chicken dinners, sausages, and hot dogs and a variety of desserts for donation and we will have pop, water, and beer available for purchase. We are using a local company for our inflatables this year as well and she will provide slushies and cotton candy!! NEW this year, DUNK TANK.”
The event may be new for last year and this year, but community days existed for Jewett in the past as well. “We remember when we were kids how fun it was when Jewett had Community Days. They had a parade, big wheel races, greased pole climbing, greased pig catching, Queen/Princess contests, rides, entertainment, etc. It was a great time with family and community. We would love it if anyone had pictures from those days that we could copy and print to display during the event.”
In the future, Prevot said she’d like to see the event happen closer to the Foruth of July and include a parade and even more fun events.
“Our goal is to include everyone and bring our little community together,” Prevot said. “Get to know your neighbors or someone across town, reunite with those who moved away and are back for a visit – let’s give them something to come back home for! Community events like these bring people together and also brings people to our village – this is essential to our community.”
There will be at least one more organizational meeting the week before to iron out final details and tie up any loose ends. In the meantime, there are still some things needed to make the day great. “We still need basket donations for our basket bingo, door prizes for both basket bingo and the car show. We need someone to be the Bingo Caller and help deliver prizes and to sell side prize tickets. We do have people helping us find umpires for the kickball tournament and refs for the basketball tournament so if anyone is interested in that, please reach out. We could always use volunteers so that people don’t have to work a station for the entire day.”

There is general excitement building in Jewett for the day to arrive and Prevot is glad to see the community coming together to put on something fun. “Just about everyday someone comes up to us about the Jewett Community Days. The best is when we hear our residents that attended last year tell other people about what a great day it was. We have had a lot of messages, calls, and in-person talks from residents that would like to volunteer or help in any way. It truly makes us so proud to live in this community.”
