The Harrison Central Husky Softball team split a pair of games this week against Indian Creek.

The first game of the week was played Monday at Indian Creek. The Redskins began the scoring with a run in the second inning. The Huskies fought back and tied the score as Isabel Yeager drove in Emma Skinner with an infield out. Three hits in the bottom of the sixth provided what would be the winning run as Creek squeaked in a two-run victory.

Husky batters scored one run on six hits and received two bases on balls, while Husky pitching surrendered only two runs on nine hits while striking out three and surrendering only one walk.

Wednesday afternoon the Huskies home field was the setting for another nail biter. Creek would draw first blood with an unearned run in the first. In the third inning Aubrey Wood had an RBI single. Creek regained the lead in the top of the fifth with a score of 2-1.

The bottom of the fifth saw the Huskies tie the game at 2 with runners on base when a rain/snow/hailstorm caused a temporary halt to the game. The Huskies were unable to score further runs after the resumption of play.

Creek again took the lead in the top of the sixth with a single run. With the Dogs down 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Olivia Tonkovich tripled, driving in the tying and winning run. The final score was 4-3.

Emma Skinner was the winning pitcher. She surrendered two earned runs on seven hits while striking out six and issuing two free passes. HC scored four runs off seven hits while collecting two bases on balls.

Harrison Central Varsity Softball vs Toronto

Momentum. Softball, like many sports, can be a game of momentum.

On Saturday, April 6, the Toronto Red Knights invaded the Lady Huskies softball diamond and quickly gained momentum by scoring two runs in the first and three runs in the third for a 5-0 score. The Huskies took over the momentum by scoring four runs in the third, one run in the fourth and six runs in the bottom of the sixth to create an 11-5 seemingly safe lead. The Red Knights grabbed the momentum in the seventh scoring nine runs to overtake the lead, 14-11. The bottom of the seventh proved to be another swing of momentum as the Huskies scored four of their runs for a walk off 15-14 victory. Toronto scored 14 runs on 15 hits while the Huskies committed five errors. Central’s 15 runs came on 17 hits and four Toronto errors.

The Huskies recorded four extra base hits as Olivia Tonkovich, Bailey Smith and MicKayla Pelegreen recorded doubles. Pelegreen also smashed a triple. Tonkovich led the Huskies with four RBIs, Pelegreen added three and Rylee Smith added two. Kara Blackburn, Aubrey Wood, Emma Skinner, and Kailey Banal all contributed one RBI.

“It’s good to come back. It is good to see our young players finally getting some confidence at the plate and swinging the bat and putting the ball into play and doing different things. It was a tough game. I told them the last inning if they let Toronto hang around, they would come back and of course they did but we came back and answered. That’s all I can ask for,” stated Coach Darrin Young.

Emma Skinner added to her victories on the hill.

The Lady Huskies were unable to play Thursday and Friday due to the weather. Their next contest will be Monday at Beaver Local at 5 p.m.
