Hopedale council awards roof bid, discusses repairs and park updates

Work can now begin on the village’s municipal building roof replacement. At its Aug. 13 meeting, council reviewed three bids and unanimously approved council member Willy Luther’s motion to accept Yoder’s Roofing’s bid of $25,500 for a metal roof.

Other bids included K&W Exteriors at $23,493.50 for metal and $22,715.69 for shingles, and Shamrock Roofing at $28,175 for metal roofing only.

Mayor Mike Pelegreen and Village Administrator Don Writesall also attended the Harrison County Commissioners meeting to request financial help in repairing the village’s siren message board. Commissioner Paul Prevot had previously toured Hopedale and noted several infrastructure concerns, including a Penn Central slip, a railroad track water issue, failing creek pipes and sinkholes along Ohio 159. The county’s Community Improvement Corporation’s Jodi Hennis will arrange a Zoom meeting with the Ohio Mid-Eastern Governments Association to explore funding options.

In addition, Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District representative Erin Wright requested the village obtain cost estimates from two engineering firms — Diversified Engineering and W.E. Quicksall & Associates by Aug. 22.

Under parks, Joe Johnson, Kendall Johnson and Todd Stringer repaired the play ship at the village park. Workers are painting it, and Luther will look for new swings. A new gate was installed at a cost of $2,000, and park benches throughout the village are being repaired and repainted.

Council also announced:

— Hydrant flushing and water tank work are complete, with installation of an altitude valve, electrical work, plumbing and crack sealing scheduled next.

— Citations will be issued to two residents on Main and East Main streets for property violations.

— Resolution 2025-04 was approved for renewal of the 2.5-mill street repair levy.

— Ordinance 2025-04 was read approving the Ohio Department of Transportation to remove road markings and handle snow and ice removal this winter.
