They’re Coming to Take Me Away
Homesteading: Three questions to ask yourself before homesteading
Why do you want to homestead? What are your expectations of homesteading? Is there someone you can connect with to help you or guide you? Now I’m sure that others would have other ideas of things to consider and to be honest, the list could be very long. My reason why was simply just having better food. We are what we put in our bodies, so to speak. If I put good food in, then the outcome should be better health. No processed food, no GMO’s, no bio-engineered foods. My expectations too, were probably different.
We started out big, I mean really big, especially with me still working as a nurse and trying to keep up with the gardens, chickens, pigs and then a goat. Over a period of time, we lightened the load a little at a time. Cut back from 75 chickens to 30-40, went from 13 hogs to three, and we no longer have any goats.
Our gardens have changed a bit over the years; where we had one very large garden we now have four. Of the four, one is large and the other three are smaller. They are a bit more managable because of doing the Back to Eden garden method.
I work from home now, so that enables me to have a flexible schedule. I have several people that I have connected with over the years of homesteading, some locally, some in other states and some from Youtube. There is a wide open wealth of information out there, you just need to look or chat to local people to find out who is doing “homesteading”.
