In high school football, the action may unfold between the lines, but anyone who knows the game understands that tradition thrives on the sidelines. For more than 50 years at Wagner Field in Cadiz, no tradition has been stronger than the steady presence of the “Chain Gang.”
Taking over from dedicated workers such as Raymond Jones and Gary Myers, a core group of men has faithfully handled sideline duties for Harrison County football games. They mark the chains, track first downs and quietly ensure the game runs smoothly. Rain or shine, in blowouts and nail-biters, they have shown up with quiet determination and steady focus.
Rich McKinney and Chuck George now join 20-year veteran Tim Kenny and 50-year veterans Dane Morgan and Kenny Zitko in “managing the game.” Although health issues have kept Morgan off the sideline since 2020, he still oversees equipment and staffing for every home contest.
Morgan and Zitko recall being recruited in 1974 by longtime golf coach Carl Haught to take over sideline duties. Neither expected the passion that would follow. Each has now logged 52 years in the role, highlighted by working a playoff game, which both cite as their most memorable moment.
The roster has shifted over the years, but the commitment has never wavered. Through rule changes, new stadiums and generations of players, one constant has remained: the Chain Gang was there. They arrived early, stayed through the final whistle and made Friday nights possible.
Beyond the field, members of the crew have also served their community as teachers, coaches, school and local board members, public officials and volunteers.
Members of the Chain Gang over the past five decades include: Dane Morgan (active), Kenny Zitko (active), Tim Kenny (active), Rich McKinney (active), Chuck George (active), Gary Myers, John Ridgeway, Dave Morgan (deceased) and Raymond Jones (deceased).
These guardians of the sidelines may not have scored touchdowns, but they earned their honor yard by yard, standing as symbols of dedication, service and hometown pride.
