Downtown Cadiz will host its first-ever Shop Hop on Small Business Saturday, Nov. 29, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., giving visitors the chance to explore local shops, enjoy refreshments and win prizes.
The event was organized by Holly Cumberworth, owner of Farmhouse Remnants, who wanted to see more people visiting and supporting small businesses in downtown Cadiz.
“A shop hop is when shops advertise that you can visit a group of shops in a downtown area,” Cumberworth said. “Each shop usually offers drinks, snacks and giveaways. We will have at least eight shops and restaurants participating.”
Cumberworth said she hopes the event helps businesses throughout the year. “We hope by doing this, shops can build their customer base and have more return customers,” she said.
Two other local shop owners, Kate Fogle and Abby Roberts, joined Cumberworth in organizing the event. Fogle, owner of Thelma Olive, said she wanted to bring the community together while helping small businesses thrive.
“It’s a good way to see what is in town,” Fogle said. “It is also a free event for the public — everyone is welcome. Lots of the uptown businesses will also have sales and special treats during the shop hop.”
Fogle said she has seen similar events succeed in other Ohio Valley towns and hopes Cadiz will see the same success. “I hope we can boost our area more and really put Cadiz on the map as a place to shop and dine,” she said.
Roberts, owner of Peaceflower Pottery, said the idea grew from the success of a recent adult trick-or-treating event downtown. “It was so much fun,” she said. “Afterward, a few of us who have retail stores thought we should do something similar for Small Business Saturday, so we brainstormed together and came up with this.”
Roberts added that Cadiz has “such great potential.”
“We have the cutest little village,” she said. “Small businesses need all the support we can get. There are so many unique and even handcrafted gifts located in Cadiz along with some amazing food and a winery as well.”
All three organizers said they hope for a strong turnout and a new annual tradition that brings residents together and strengthens the uptown business district.
“Most importantly,” Roberts said, “we hope residents will join in sharing the vision we have to grow a fun, thriving uptown business community.”
