A call to stay spiritually refreshed

Complacency, strife, the daily grind and anger can creep in and dull our hearts

Let’s face it: many of the things we do day to day can get stale. That is expected with earthly things, but it should be avoided when it comes to spiritual matters. Complacency, strife, the daily grind and anger can creep in and dull our hearts. Which begs the question: Do you have a Bible reading plan? Do you read a daily devotional? Do you have an ongoing plan to refresh yourself spiritually?

The apostle Paul warned in Ephesians 5, “Be very careful how you live — not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Do not be foolish but understand what the Lord’s will is.”

One way we stay refreshed is by making the effort to know the Lord better. Moses prayed, “Let me know your ways so I may understand you more fully and continue to enjoy your favor.” Anyone can memorize a few verses, but do we know God’s ways?

The Pharisees in Jesus’ day knew the rules and regulations and even created many of their own, but they did not know the heart of God the way David did. The psalmist prayed, “I have devoted myself to your commandments; I am not ashamed of them. How I honor and love your commands. They refresh and comfort me in all my troubles.” That is a key to staying spiritually strong.

Another way to stay refreshed is to guard unity. That does not mean compromising biblical truth for the sake of peace, but it does mean deferring to one another on nonessential matters. Paul told the Corinthians, “Now I appeal to you in our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in agreement and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same purpose.”

Nothing will harm unity faster than petty disagreements. It can also discourage visitors from returning if they sense tension within a church.

Refreshing also comes when we renew our focus on eternity. Paul encouraged the Colossians by writing, “Since you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts and minds on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Your old life died, and your real life is now hidden with Christ in God.”

Do not stay where you are spiritually. Renew, recharge and refresh yourself in the Lord. It is time for a refreshed perspective on the things of God.
