After a 4-19 season a year ago, Malvern softball enters the 2026 campaign focused on growth and player development, while also becoming more competitive in the Inter-Valley Conference North Division.

And if there is a coach to lead the Hornets – who went 0-12 in their division in 2025 – to the win column, it will be head coach Taylor Zeiger, who has softball in her blood. Need evidence? Before graduating in 2012, Zeiger set 18 Malvern softball records and is a member of the MHS Athletic Hall of Fame.

Now in her second year leading the program and fifth overall with the team, Zeiger believes this season’s roster brings a different dynamic—one built on increased numbers, versatility, and a strong group of young players.

“Our numbers have grown,” Zeiger said. “We went from 11 last year to carrying 14 this season. Ten of our 14 are underclassmen. So, although we are young, I like the idea of having more girls to push each other and having the option to move kids around to learn more than one position.”

That added depth could be a key factor for the Hornets as they look to improve on last season’s win total. Malvern returns a solid core of letter winners, led by senior infielder Amber Gray and junior pitcher/infielder Ashlyn Bush. Bush is expected to play a major role both in the circle and defensively, while Gray provides leadership and experience.

Juniors Lexi Brabant and Skye Harmon also return as contributors in the infield and outfield, respectively, while a group of sophomores – including Emily Bugh (OF), Emmerson Yerrick (OF), Lexi Wood (IF/OF), and Addie Myers (OF) – gained valuable experience last season and should take a step forward this spring.

The Hornets are also counting on a promising group of newcomers to make an immediate impact. Players like Lexi Yost (IF/Util), Sophia Moore (P/IF), Mia Sikorsky (IF/OF), Charleigh Andric (OF), Jayden Clark (P/OF), and Evelyn Erden (OF) add depth across multiple positions, giving the lineup greater flexibility.

Back on the field for Malvern softball this season are letter winners Emily Bugh, front left, Emmerson Yerrick, Adelynn Myers, Lexi Wood; Ashlyn Bush, back left, Lexi Brabant, Jayden Clark, Amber Gray and Skye Harmon.

“We’re young and more versatile than in the past,” Zeiger said. “This freshman class has collectively played more softball than we have had in the last few years. I think it will be refreshing stepping into the season with stronger game IQ and overall experience.”

That versatility should help ease pressure on key positions, particularly pitching and catching, as the Hornets look to spread responsibilities more evenly throughout the lineup.

Despite the optimism, the coach knows there are still areas that need improvement—especially at the plate.

“With this young team, we are trying to encourage more confidence in the box,” Zeiger said. “Jumping on good pitches early and watching fewer strikes go by. Hitting all the way through the lineup is our goal this season.”

In the competitive IVC North that includes strong programs like Conotton Valley, Strasburg-Franklin, and Newcomerstown, the Hornets understand the challenge ahead. But with increased depth and a more experienced roster, expectations are centered on progress.

“We are hoping to be more competitive among these teams this season,” Zeiger said.

While the wins may not come easily, Zeiger believes her squad has taken important steps forward. With a young, energetic roster and a renewed sense of confidence, the Hornets are building a foundation that will carry them into the future.
