Malvern cross country teams open season at Claymont

The Malvern boys and girls cross country teams opened their season Aug. 23 at the Claymont Early Bird Invitational, with both squads turning in solid performances against large fields.

For the Lady Hornets, junior Emma Maher led the way with a 16th-place finish out of 114 runners, crossing the line in 22:11. Sophomore Olivia Maher followed in 26th place with a lifetime personal best of 23:01, while junior Mya Doughty finished 33rd in 23:33. All three earned medals for their efforts.

Rounding out the varsity lineup were Lexus Buchman, who placed 113th in 39:58, and Annabell Renz, who was 114th in 46:37, recording a lifetime personal best. As a team, the Malvern girls placed 11th out of 14 schools.

On the boys side, sophomore Cooper Dorr led the Hornets with a 25th-place finish in 19:24, edging out teammate Dalton Pennington, who was 26th in 19:24.5. Junior Jacob McClelland followed in 32nd with a time of 19:42, and sophomore Dekon Pennington ran a lifetime best of 20:22 to finish 43rd. All four Hornet runners medaled.

Also competing for Malvern were Parker Babiczuk, who finished 115th in 30:34, and Andersen Myers, who placed 116th in 30:35, both setting lifetime personal records. The Hornet boys placed 7th overall out of 14 teams.

The Hornets return to action Aug. 27 at East Canton High School.
