Wayne County students learn bicycle safety

First-grade students from Orrville City Schools, Rittman Exempted Village Schools, Green Local Schools, Dalton Local Schools, Norwayne Local Schools and Northwestern Local Schools participated in bicycle safety programs during March, April and May.

Officers from the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office and local police departments led safety discussions with the students while Quota of Wayne County volunteers helped each student with an individualized helmet fitting. Helmets and coloring books were supplied by the local Quota club.

Romich Foundation Makerspace assisted the project through a donation of drawstring bags to help students get the helmets home safely.

Quota of Wayne County thanked the officers who participated in the program — detective Shane from Orrville, officers Shilling and Hunter from Rittman, officer Stump from Green, deputy Ecker from Dalton, deputy Warner and officer Stephen from Norwayne, and deputy Peterson and officer Nowlin from Northwestern — for sharing their safety knowledge with the students. Bill Buchwalter from Ride On participated in Norwayne’s long-established Safety First program.

Quota of Wayne County’s outreach assists those in need with the purchase of hearing aids, provides amplification systems to local schools, awards scholarships to high school students and adults, and serves those in need throughout Wayne County.

The Safety First bicycle safety program is an outreach of the Quota Community & Youth Committee.
