As the United States prepares to commemorate the 250th anniversary of its founding in 2026, the village of Smithville is organizing its own patriotic observance — drawing on more than two centuries of local history and a distinctly hometown approach to the celebration.
The community is planning a series of monthly events designed to involve residents of all ages and build toward an August “crescendo” that brings back a local tradition: the village ox roast.
“Planning our events started with an invitation from the Daughters of the American Revolution,” Smithville Mayor Tom Poulson said, describing how early outreach and community meetings sparked a wide range of ideas from residents. “We had an infinite number of ideas. All we had to do was pare it down to something doable.”
As part of a countywide initiative by the Wayne County Commissioners, a tree planting and dedication in Smithville is scheduled for April 15. Under the plan, public entities — including villages, townships, cities and qualifying public institutions — are invited to request a tree at no cost. The county will coordinate distribution through a central pickup location.
“America 250 is about more than a single event; it’s about creating something lasting that communities can point to for generations,” Commissioner Matt Martin said. “By planting a white oak in towns and public spaces across Wayne County, we’re giving residents a living symbol of this milestone — one that grows with the community and helps tell the story of where we’ve been and where we’re going.”
Memorial Day remains a cornerstone of Smithville’s annual civic calendar, and Smithville Village Office Assistant Kate Hammond and Office Administrator Amy Hescht have been coordinating parade logistics and community events since late 2025.
“For families and children, we are planning a movie in the park on July 18, drawing from an Ohio-themed list of films connected to the state through actors, directors or other ties,” Hammond said. “If attendance is strong, it might turn into an annual event.”
The planning effort has involved residents, community groups and local businesses working together to shape the celebration.
“Smithville’s America 250 initiative has become a true community effort, supported by council members, businesses, volunteers and local institutions,” Hescht said. “It has really been a group effort.”
Additional event details and schedules will be released as organizers finalize plans and prepare flyers for the monthly activities leading up to the August ox roast celebration.
