Main Street Wooster and the City of Wooster are seeking artists for three public art projects that will help shape downtown Wooster’s growing Arts District.

Main Street Wooster, in partnership with the City of Wooster, has launched a call to artists for three public art projects that will help shape downtown Wooster’s Arts District.

The Square Alley Public Art Initiative seeks artists to create public artwork that reflects the people, stories, history and character of Wooster while helping transform public spaces into places for connection and creativity.

The initiative is made possible through support from the Ardelle and Theresa Glaze Foundation, the Robert and Esther Black Family Foundation Fund of the Richland County Foundation, the Ralph R. and Grace B. Jones Foundation, and the Donald and Alice Noble Foundation.

Through community surveys and conversations, residents shared a vision for public art that reflects local identity, encourages interaction, and creates spaces where people want to gather, explore and linger. The projects will become visible additions to downtown Wooster.

“Community members told us they want public art that reflects Wooster’s people, stories, history and natural character while also inspiring connection, pride and shared experiences,” said Shannon Waller, executive director of Main Street Wooster. “We’re looking for artists who can capture that spirit and create work that attracts viewers and sparks pride in our community.”

Artists may apply for one, two or all three projects. Due to the size of the walls and road, the imagery need not cover a large portion of the space available. Design elements may be scattered or contained in a select area.

Project one is a landmark Arts District mural on the south facade of 146 W. South St. The site offers artists an expansive canvas in the heart of Wooster’s Arts District and an opportunity to create a signature visual landmark. The budget is $11,000.

Project two is a bold statement along South Market Street on the north facade of 231 S. Market St. The location is along one of downtown Wooster’s busiest corridors. Artists are encouraged to create work that strengthens the district’s creative identity and enhances the pedestrian experience. The budget is $8,000.

Project three is a community-created street art experience. Square Alley will become a canvas for a collaborative public art project designed to invite participation and interaction. Community engagement is a required component of this project, creating an opportunity for artists to work directly alongside residents to transform the space into an engaging public destination. The budget is $8,000.

Artists are encouraged to draw inspiration from themes that emerged through public engagement including local history, education, industry, sports, entertainment, institutions and natural resources.

The application deadline is July 6. Artist notifications will be made July 17, and additional rounds may be solicited. The installation completion deadline is Aug. 16, 2027.

Applications will be evaluated by a panel representing Main Street Wooster, Wayne Center for the Arts and the City of Wooster, and they will be subject to building owner approval. Selection criteria include artistic merit, technical skill, relevant experience and alignment with community design priorities.
