Suicide prevention training to focus on firearm safety
Coalition will introduce voluntary 'Pause Plans' and practical intervention strategies
The Medina County Coalition for Suicide Prevention, in collaboration with Everything Outdoor Camping & Tactical, will host a community-focused training program titled "Pause, Not Punishment: Suicide Prevention & Firearm Safety" from 5:30-8 p.m. June 23 at the South Cuyahoga Sportsmen's Association in Medina.
The practical, peer-focused training is designed for federal firearms license dealers, gun range owners and staff, firearms instructors, veterans and members of the shooting sports community. The session aims to equip participants with tools to recognize when someone may be struggling, start meaningful conversations and connect individuals with support during difficult times.
Members of the firearm community often serve as trusted voices among peers, customers and loved ones. Organizers say the training emphasizes how those relationships can play a critical role in preventing suicide while reinforcing respect for personal responsibility and firearm ownership.
A key feature of the training is the introduction of Pause Plans, a voluntary, temporary safety strategy that helps individuals create time, space and support during periods of heightened stress or crisis. The approach prioritizes dignity, trust and informed choice.
"This training is not about mandates or restrictions," organizers said. "It's about equipping trusted community members with practical, real-world tools that may help save a life."
Topics will include recognizing warning signs that someone may need support, how to start conversations when concerned about someone, real-world scenarios encountered by firearm retailers and instructors, understanding and implementing Pause Plans, and local and national resources for individuals and families.
Participants will gain practical conversation strategies, relevant examples tailored to firearm-community settings, a deeper understanding of voluntary safety planning and resources to share within their networks.
Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. with a complimentary barbecue dinner. The training session will run from 6:30-8 p.m. Dinner will be catered by Big Dog Daddy's, a veteran-owned business. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early, as food service will conclude when the training begins.
The Medina County Coalition for Suicide Prevention is dedicated to reducing suicide through education, awareness and community partnerships. The coalition promotes evidence-based prevention strategies and connects individuals and families to resources and support services.
