Each year, as part of its mission, the Medina County Art League (MCAL) provides scholarships to select graduating Medina County high school senior art students to help further their art education.
Medina County senior art students who have an acceptance letter from a college or university and have decided to major or minor in an art-related field can apply for scholarship consideration. With the assistance of their high school art teachers, the senior art students must submit five examples of their artwork to the Medina County District Library for judging.
The submitted student portfolios are unpacked by the library staff, and all labels and identification are hidden. Blind judging of the artwork is performed by three judges who are former art teachers. The portfolios are put on display in the annual High School Scholarship Exhibit after judging concludes, and students receive their awards at a reception at the library.
The submitted portfolios are currently on display at the library through April 4.
This year MCAL awarded six students art scholarships to their chosen school of higher learning. The Best of Show scholarship award was given to Cameron Gorog of Wadsworth High School.
The first-place scholarship award was presented to Rebecca Wesig of Wadsworth High School. The other students awarded scholarships were: second place – Ashton Lewis of Highland High School; third place – Leah C. Andrews of Medina High School; honorable mention – Alexis Mutch of Highland High School and Natalia Vujas of Wadsworth High School. The Library Choice Award was given to Leah C. Andrews.
The MCAL scholarship program is administered by Janet Baran of MCAL. The scholarships are primarily funded by the annual art raffle at the MCAL-organized Art in the Park, contributions from the exhibiting artists, and generous donations from individuals and local businesses. The art raffle consists of art donations from the Art in the Park artists and MCAL artists. This year, the Medina County Art League provided a total of nearly $10,000 in scholarships.
