A local faith-based initiative is inviting residents to embrace the spirit of Advent through movement, prayer and charitable giving. Mary’s Miles, a virtual challenge held between Thanksgiving and Christmas, encourages participants to complete 92 miles — the approximate distance Mary and Joseph traveled from Nazareth to Bethlehem.
Each mile serves as an opportunity for prayer or quiet reflection as participants prepare their hearts for the Christmas season. The event was originally inspired by Nikki Yezbak, who created the challenge in gratitude for the care her family received at Akron Children’s Hospital. This year’s effort will again support the hospital as well as the Yezbak family, who organizers say remain in the community’s prayers.
Sara Bednar, who is helping coordinate the program locally, said the challenge offers a meaningful way for families and individuals to engage in faith-focused activity during the holidays. Participants may walk, run, bike, increase their daily steps or simply move in ways that fit their lifestyle.
“This is a chance to journey with purpose, just as Mary and Joseph did,” Bednar said. “Every mile is an intentional moment of prayer, gratitude or reflection.”
The event is free to join, though organizers encourage participants to consider making a donation benefiting Akron Children’s Hospital and the Yezbak family. Supporters are also invited to share their progress online and encourage others to take part.
