Assemblage artist Gwen Waight to share her storytelling process at Art League meeting
The Medina County Art League will host the award-winning Peninsula artist Nov. 24, offering the public an inside look at her imaginative found-object creations.
What do an ice pick, toy guns, a meat grinder and an Asian ceramic figurine have in common? They are all likely to appear in the assemblages of Peninsula artist Gwen Waight, who constructs narratives using unexpected found objects, the final stories often causing viewers to gasp in wonder, delight or even feel a nudge of conscience.
What is an assemblage? How is it different from or the same as collage? How can a group of unrelated objects tell a story? How does she make them all stick together? The public is invited to the next Medina County Art League meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24, to hear Waight’s story of how she came to create this type of art and why storytelling is so important to her.
Waight’s art has been shown in venues throughout Ohio and beyond. She has won multiple awards, and her work is widely collected. Her motto is “Stay Open,” a good reminder for all of us, whether artists or not.
A short business meeting will follow Waight’s presentation. Guests are always welcome to attend MCAL member meetings, which are held the fourth Monday of the month at 7 p.m. in the Root Candles Community Room.
You can join the Medina County Art League can do so at any meeting or by visiting www.medinacountyartleague.com. Information about workshops, exhibits and volunteer opportunities can also be found there.
