H.S. FOOTBALL PREVIEW
WEEK 3
Games of Sept.
5
Wadsworth (2-0)
at Medina (1-1)
Last week: Wadsworth 35, New Albany 7; Hoover 42,
Medina 17
Last Year: Wadsworth 51, Medina 7
This year: Medina’s oldest rivalry – this is the
teams’ 79th meeting – will end as a non-league entity, with Medina
joining Wadsworth in the Suburban League in 2026 when they will meet as league
foes for the first time. The Bees are coming off a lopsided loss to Hoover in
which they actually outgained the Vikings from scrimmage. River Blomquist had a
strong game at quarterback with 226 yards of total offense, 167 through the
air. Hoover returned a blocked punt for a touchdown as it raced to a 21-0
first-quarter lead. The Bees will need to try to find a way to slow down
Wadsworth quarterback Brysen Hall. The sophomore is coming off a 317-yard,
three-touchdown performance in the win over New Albany. Wadsworth rolled up
more than 460 yards of total offense in that game.
Highland (2-0)
at Avon Lake (0-2)
Last week:Highland 32, Hudson 0; Lake Catholic 21,
Avon Lake 14
Last Year: Did not play
This year: Avon Lake is the Hornets’ second
consecutive new opponent as teams continue to not want to face them in
non-league contests. Last week the Hornets routed Hudson in a battle of future
Suburban League foes. Casey Myser scored a pair of TDs for the Hornets, who
scored all their points in the ground. The other TDs came from Lucas Gerding
and Dylan Lazar. Jonah Kowza’s 34-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter
put the game into the running clock. Highland’s defense was impressive
throughout, pitching a shutout keyed by interceptions from Jameson Gordon and
Nick Dobkowski. Evan Foust caused a fumble and had three tackles for loss. Avon
Lake has opened with losses to Strongsville and Mentor Lake Catholic and thus
will conclude a brutal non-league schedule.
This year: Columbian replaces Akron Ellet on the
Bucks’ schedule. Buckeye defeated Ellet 41-7 a year ago. Against Amherst last week, a pair of Dylan
Sopko touchdowns helped the Bucks turn an early 7-0 deficit into a 21-7 lead heading
into the final period. The Comets scored with just under five minutes left to
make it a one-possession game but Buckeye’s defense was strong down the stretch
against an Amherst offense that rolled up yards throughout the game but after
Cy Christensen’s early 91-yard touchdown saw its explosiveness limited. While
obviously early, Buckeye heads to Week 3 along in first place in the Division
III, Region 10 standings. Columbian is coming off a 45-12 shellacking of
Mansfield Senior after dropping a tough Week 1 game at Fremont Ross, 13-9.
This
year: Keystone
ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown last week against Cloverleaf,
missed the extra point and then was never heard from again as the Colts rolled
off 22 unanswered points. Nine of those game courtesy of Austin Sustercic, who
booted three field goals, including a 41-yarder in the second quarter, after
which Cloverleaf led 12-6. Sustercic’s third field goal gave the Colts a
two-score lead in the fourth quarter and Jimmy Tolley’s fumble recovery in the
end zone moments later put the game away. Keystone had more yards on the
opening kickoff than it did on offense against a Colt defense that force a pair
of Wildcat turnovers. Despite
being outgained by more than 100 yards, the Warriors forced three turnovers and
relied on Levi Kiko for a 16-14 win on the road at Richmond Edison.
Carrollton’s Hunter Allison was 8-of-19 for 112 yards with a TD and a pick and
completed a crucial 17-yard completion on fourth down to allow the Warriors –
who held a 10-point fourth-quarter lead – to run out the clock..
Rocky River (2-0)
at Lake (2-0)
Last week: Rocky River 55, John Marshall 6; Lake 48,
Boardman 20
Last Year: Did not play
This
year: For the
second consecutive week, Lake’s Ty DeGeorge accounted for five scores as the
Blue Streaks continue to roll. Doing his best impression of a Swiss Army knife,
DeGeorge ran for two TDs, caught one TD pass, had a pick-six of 72 yards, and
also returned a punt 52 yards for another score in Lake’s rout of Boardman.
Meanwhile, QB Alex Quior is a sterling 19-of-21 on the season for 377 yards and
three TDs. Rocky River should present the Blue Streaks with their sternest test
of the season so far. True, the Pirates’ two opponents own a collective record
of 0-4 on the season, but Rocky River performed up to expectations in
outscoring Div. II Firestone and Div. I John Hay by a combined 107-13.
Marlington (1-1)
at Warren Howland (1-1)
Last week: Northwest 35, Marlington 0; Geneva 56,
Howland 21
Last Year: Did not play
This
year: After a
19-8 season opening victory over Warrensville Heights, the Dukes were humbled
by Northwest, losing 35-0. Marlington matched the Indians through the air, but
Northwest stuffed the Dukes’ running attack, limiting them to an abysmal six
yards on 27 carries. Against Div. III Howland, Marlington will face a team that
survived a low-scoring defensive battle to kick off the season but was blown
out the following week by 35 points. The Tigers also had problems of their own
in establishing the run in a 56-21 loss to undefeated Geneva.
Springfield (1-1)
at Minerva (1-1)
Last week: Minerva 23, Crestwood 8; Rootstown 44,
Springfield 6
Last
Year: Springfield 13, Minerva 7
This
year: Lion fans
didn’t have to wait long for the Zach Slates era to pay dividends as Minerva
manhandled Crestwood – a team that gave Div. VII perennial playoff team
Mogadore all it could handle in Week 1 — winning 23-8. The Lions’ Timmy
Kirkpatrick (27 attempts) gashed the Red Devils’ defense for 235 yards as 300
of Minerva’s 328 total yards came on the ground. Staying at home, Slates and
company will look for the Lions’ first winning streak since 2020 against
Springfield. The Spartans were roughed up 44-6 last week as undefeated
Rootstown cruised to a 31-0 halftime lead. The Spartans’ porous defense has now
surrendered 76 points on the season.
Harrison
Central (0-2) at Malvern (1-1)
Last week: Newcomerstown 28, Harrison Central 21;
Martins Ferry 35, Malvern 6
Last
Year: Malvern
38, Harrison Central 28
This
year: The
Hornets were undone by turnovers in their 35-6 loss to Martins Ferry as Jaxon
Jones threw four interceptions, including a pick-six that enabled the Purple
Riders to open up a 21-0 second-quarter lead. More disconcerting is that
Martins Ferry chewed up large chunks of yardage, gaining 284 yards on the
ground to hold a 340-133 advantage in total yards. Malvern cannot afford to
look past Harrison Central. The Huskies are winless on the season but
demonstrated some pluck as they bounced back from a 20-7 third-quarter deficit
to briefly take a 21-20 lead at Newcomerstown before falling 28-21.
Coshocton (1-1)
at Sparta Highland (0-2)
Last week: Coshocton 29, Tusky Valley 23; Dalton
28, Highland 0
Last Year: Highland 42, Coshocton 28
This year: Coshocton held off Tusky Valley’s late
drive and held on to win its home opener. RB Champ Haley had a great game for
the Redskins, catching a TD pass from Mason Williams and running for 2 more
scores, while Cooper George’s INT late in the first half snuffed a TV drive
deep in CHS territory. The Scots, meanwhile, are struggling out of the gate and
were blanked at home a week ago by Dalton.
River View (0-2)
at Crooksville (2-0)
Last week: Ridgewood 56, River View 0; Crooksville
30, Buckeye Trail 6
Last Year: Did not play
This year: New River View coach Tyler McKee must
be wondering when the first break on the schedule comes as the Black Bears,
after getting outscored 102-0 against Garaway and Ridgewood — two teams with
aspirations of deep playoff runs and arguably the hardest foes on the schedule
— now travel to Crooksville to face the unbeaten Ceramics.
Cle. Lutheran
East (1-1) at Ridgewood (2-0)
Last week: Norton 54, Lutheran East 20; Ridgewood
56, River View 0
Last Year: Did not play
This year: After giving up more than 300 total
yards to Norton speedster Buddy Willig a week ago, Lutheran East had better
bring its track shoes on the long ride south to West Lafayette to take on the
Generals, who boast a roster bursting with speed and skill and who have yet to be tested.
Last week, Logan Wince brought a punt back 54 yards for a score the first time
Ridgewood touched the ball and the rout was on.
Lucas (1-1) at
Danville (1-1)
Last week: Hillsdale 31, Lucas 0; Utica 27,
Danville 8
Last Year: Did not play
This year: Danville
will look to rebound after a decisive 27-8 loss to Utica last Friday. The Blue
Devils missed on several opportunities early, then watched as the Redskins took
control with its short passing game. Danville will need its running game, led
by Cyren Wallace, to get back on track this week and control the ball against a
Lucas team that put up 51 points in its opening game. The Cubs did fall, 31-0,
to last year’s state semifinalist Hillsdale last week.
Mount Vernon (1-1)
at Delaware Hayes (1-1)
Last week: Mount Vernon 24, Newark 7; Hayes 18,
Col. Marion-Franklin 15
Last Year: Hayes 35, Mount Vernon 0
This year: Mount
Vernon hopes to keep the momentum going after a 24-7 victory over Newark last
week. The Yellow Jackets had a strong performance, shutting down a Wildcat team
that had scored 56 in its opening game. Landon Dawson returned an interception
for a touchdown and Darrin Monahan also intercepted a Newark pass. MV will need
another strong defensive performance this week against Hayes. The Pacers are
coming off an 18-15 victory over Marion Franklin. Favour Akih, an Ohio State
commit at running back, was injured in the opening game and the Pacers are not
sure if he’ll play, but they have a solid passing game to make up for it.
East Knox (0-2)
at Colonel Crawford (2-0)
Last week: Wynford 28, East Knox 12; Col. Crawford
28, Fairfield Union 14
Last Year: Col. Crawford 33, East Knox 0
This year: East Knox
will be trying to pick up its first win of the season this Friday but face an
undefeated Colonel Crawford team that beat Fairfield Union 28-14 a week ago.
The Eagles have a solid running game, led by Connor McMichael, which will be a
tough matchup for the East Knox defense, led by Caden Ridenour. One thing the
Bulldogs can do is control the ball and the clock with the passing of Jax
Lester and the running of Landon Boyd
Centerburg (1-1)
at Worthington Christian (0-2)
Last week: Johnstown 42, Centerburg 14; Bexley 14,
Worthington Christian 3
Last Year: Centerburg 44, Worthington Christian 21
This year: Centerburg
will be out to erase the sting from last week’s to Johnstown. The Trojans
struggled defending Johnnie running back Ryan Sager, who rushed for 280 yards
and seven touchdowns. The Warriors are coming off a 14-3 loss to Bexley.
Centerburg will be counting on the running of Miles Marshall (180 yards in the
loss to Johnstown) and the passing game of Blane Ball to score on the Warriors.
Fredericktown (2-0)
at Utica (1-1)
Last week: Fredericktown 34, Northridge 14; Utica
27, Danville 8
Last Year: Utica 18, Fredericktown 15
This
year:
Fredericktown hopes to keep things rolling under new head coach Scott Spitler.
The Freddies are coming off a 34-14 victory over Northridge last week.
Quarterback Blake Sipes had a huge game for the Freddies, rushing for 246 yards
and three touchdowns. The Redskins are coming off a 28-7 victory over Danville
last Friday. Quarterback Austin Hays and receiver Hunter McKinney connected
several times to burn the Blue Devils.
West Holmes (1-1)
at Dover (1-1)
Last week: West Holmes 28, Orrville 20; Maple
Heights 28, Dover 22
Last Year: Dover 42, West Holmes 9
This year: Dover is coming off a wild game in the
loss to Maple Heights, which was without key players on both sides of the ball
for undisclosed reasons. After the Mustangs took an early 8-0 lead, Dover’s
Jack Judkins scored on a 3-yard run after which a successful 2-point attempt
made it 8-8. Justin Hughes added a 43-yard TD reception from Judkins that gave
the Tornadoes a 14-8 lead but a touchdown late in the first half by Maple
Heights left Dover trailing 16-14 at halftime. The Tornadoes got a short TD run
from Judkins and a successful 2-point try to lead 22-16 late in the third
quarter. The Mustangs answered with a TD inside the four-minute mark to tie the
game, after which an interception of a Judkins throw set up Maple Heights for
the decisive touchdown in the closing moments. West Holmes is coming off its
first win of the season, a 28-20 victory at home against Orrville. After losing
to Triway on a last-minute field goal in Week 1, the Knights rebounded with a
balanced attack to top the Red Riders, as Brandon Parsons was 13 of 19 passing
for 150 yards and 2 TDs, including one to Reid Hoxworth (3 rec., 71 yds.), and
Brody Bowman added 115 rushing yards on 18 carries. Defensively, Chris Williams
was in on 15 tackles and freshman S Coi Beachy had 14.
St. Thomas
Aquinas (0-1) at Tuscarawas Central Catholic (0-2)
Last week: Fisher Catholic 35, TCC 8; St. Thomas
Aquinas 46, Valley Christian 0.
Last year: Did not play.
This week: The Saints hurt themselves with mistakes in falling last week against
Fisher Catholic. Three interceptions, two of them returned for touchdowns, made
things difficult for an offensive that was struggling to gain yards either
through the air or on the ground. The Irish, who hail from outside of Columbus,
improved to 2-0 with the win. St. Thomas replaces Lowellville on the Saints
Schedule. Probably a good scheduling move on TCC’s part as Lowellvillle was a
Division VII playoff team a year ago, while St. Thomas finished 1-9. The
Knights have been outscored 69-6 in their first two games.
Roosevelt (DC)
(0-1) at Indian Valley (2-0)
Last week: Archbishop Carroll 37, Roosevelt 18;
Indian Valley 30, Steubenville 0
Last Year: Did not play
This year: The Braves begin a two-week stretch of
games against out-of-state opponents before beginning conference play Week 5.
The defending Div. IV state champs were again impressive on Week 2 against
Steubenville. Grady Kinsey ran for 197 yards, scored two touchdowns and a
2-point conversion and completed a pass, then took the second half off. Kinsey
had more than 130 rushing yards in the first quarter as he eclipsed the
500-yard mark in two games. Ryker Williams added a rushing touchdown and threw
a TD pass to Colts James as the Braves rolled up a 30-0 halftime lead.
Steubenville fell to 0-2 for the first time since at least the 1990s and has
not had two losses through three weeks since 2000. The first six opponents on
Indian Valley’s schedule were a combined 0-11 through the first two weeks. The
Braves will take on Expression Prep Academy on Sept. 12, also at home. The
Lions will travel north a couple of hours from Huntington, West Virginia.
East Canton (2-0)
at Sandy Valley (0-2)
Last week: East Canton 49, Wellsville 0;
Manchester 48, Sandy Valley 13
Last
Year: Sandy
Valley 55, East Canton 16
This
year: Last
year, the Cardinals were winless at 0-2 before rebounding with a resounding win
over East Canton en route to a 5-5 season. This is not the same Hornet squad,
however. In improving to 2-0 for the first time in seven years, East Canton has
outscored its opponents 87-0. Meanwhile, Sandy Valley’s defense has regressed
as the Cardinals have surrendered 50 and 48 points in losses to Fairless and
Manchester.
This year: After a blowout win over Windham to open the
season, the Tigers were tested in Week 2. Fortunately for Strasburg, Caden
Dugan came up with two critical sacks on the Crusaders’ final drive to help
secure a hard-fought 20-12 Tiger victory. Strasburg cannot take Leetonia, a
team it toyed with last season, too lightly, however. The Bears are riding high
after ending a 30-game losing streak that stretched back to 2021 with two
straight victories to open their season.
Newcomerstown (1-1)
at Conotton Valley (2-0)
Last week: Newcomerstown 28, Harrison Central 21; Conotton
Valley 46, Millersport 6
Last Year: Newcomerstown 50, Conotton Valley 0
This year: Expect
scoring Friday night, especially from Newcomerstown, which has piled up points
against Conotton Valley in recent seasons. The Trojans have scored 160 points
in the past two years against the Rockets. That included a 58-44 barnburner of
a win in 2022. The teams’ 2021 meeting was canceled due to the pandemic, part
of a four-week run of games not played by the Trojans. Newcomerstown has been
in a pair of tight contests to begin the year, falling 21-12 to Crooksville
before topping Harrison. Conotton Valley has scored 96 points in its first two
outings, but the Trojans have to feel pretty good about things with a 50-0 win
against the Rockets somewhat fresh in their minds.
Norton (1-0) at
Tusky Valley (1-1)
Last week: Norton 54, Lutheran East 20; Coshocton
29, Tusky Valley 23
Last
Year: Did not
play
This
year: A week
after a stirring, come-from-behind OT win after a tragic injury to one of its
players, Tusky Valley again played from behind in Week 2 against Coshocton,
slicing a 29-14 deficit to 29-23 in the fourth quarter. The Trojans had the
ball with a chance to tie or go ahead and had a first down at the Redskins’
25-yard line but fell short. Norton, which saw its season opener shelved due to
an outbreak of illness, rolled to a win against Lutheran East. Tusky Valley
will have its hands full trying to contain the Panthers’ Buddy Willig, who had
an 87-yard kick return TD, two rushing TDs, one receiving TD, and 309
all-purpose yards for Norton.
Fairless (2-0)
at Claymont (1-1)
Last week: Fairless 35, Waynedale 0; Smithville
27, Claymont 12
Last Year: Fairless 28, Claymont 6
This year: The Mustangs will look to bounce back
from a non-league loss at home to Smithville. It won’t come easily, though, as
the Falcons have been impressive in their first two weeks of the season,
outscoring Sandy Valley and Waynedale by a combined 85-13. Claymont has a
couple weeks left before Inter-Valley Conference South Division play starts.
The Mustangs will host Marrietta next week before traveling to Newcomerstown
for an IVC inter-division showdown. Fairless’s early start is in contrast to
the final eight weeks of 2024, when the Falcons won just once.
Loudonville (2-0) at Hillsdale (2-0)
Last
week: Loudonville 48, Richmond Hts. 16; Hillsdale 31, Lucas 0
Last
Year: Hillsdale 42, Loudonville 7
This
year: Coming
off a 2024 Div. VII state runner-up finish, the Falcons have outscored their
first two opponents by a combined 73-14 margin. QB Kael Lewis has 373 yards
passing and 3 TDs, while RB Owen Sloan has 256 carries for 233 yards and five
scores. Sloan is the school’s all-time leading rusher. After going 0-10 last
year, the neighboring Redbirds are thrilled to also be 2-0, but taking on the
veteran Falcons — and on the road — will be a much tougher test than winless
Mapleton and Richmond Heights.
Chippewa (0-2)
at Coventry (0-2)
Last week: Tuslaw 38, Chippewa 7; Rittman 47, Coventry
13
Last Year: Chippewa 12, Coventry 0
This year: Two teams desperate for a win square
off as the Chipps have been outscored through two games by a 76-7 score and the
Comets have allowed 109 points and tallied just 13. Something’s got to give
Friday night but Chippewa can’t continue to play giveaway — in both of their
losses, Chipp QBs have tossed 4 interceptions. The Chipps also have just 31
rushing yards on the season.
Mogadore (2-0)
at Dalton (2-0)
Last week: Mogadore 22, Canton Cent. Cath. 7;
Dalton 28, Sparta Highland 0
Last Year: Dalton 34, Mogadore 0
This year: A pair of small-school powers meet
again on the Bulldogs’ turf, with both boasting rock-sold defenses so far in
2025 — the Wildcats have given up one score in each of their 2 games while
Dalton allowed one TD in its opener and posted a road shutout last Friday.
Mogadore RB Connor Lehner had scoring runs of 15 and 12 yards last week and
must be contained, while Dalton is led by QB Carter Hignight and RB Jaxon Ryder, with junior WR/DB Gage Stitt an early standout.
Rittman (2-0)
at South Central (0-2)
Last week: Rittman 47, Coventry 13; Buckeye
Central 34, So. Central 7
Last Year: Rittman 37, South Central 14
This year: The Indians continued on the warpath
last week in routing Coventry and now head west to Greenwich to aim for a
second consecutive 3-0 start and try to maintain their lofty ranking in Div.
VI, Region 21.
Northwestern (0-2)
at Columbia (2-0)
Last week: Black River 37, Northwestern 7; Columbia
27, Fairview 20
Last Year: Columbia 43, Northwestern 13
This
year: The Huskies have been outscored 76-7 in their first two games
and they will have another tough matchup in Columbia. QB Logan Menge and RB
Jose Rivera lead the Raiders’ option attack. Northwestern’s sophomore QB
Leonardo Guidetti led the Huskies down the field on their first possession last
week, ending with a 36-yard scoring pass to Rylie Ramsier (10 rec., 174 yds. on
season), but then threw four picks. Safety Grady Ellerbrock has played well on
defense with a whopping 36 tackles for the Huskies.
Waynedale (0-2)
at Triway (2-0)
Last week: Fairless 35, Waynedale 0; Triway 36,
Norwayne 14
Last Year: Triway 41, Waynedale 16
This year:
The
Titans are flying high after impressive wins over West Holmes and Norwayne to
start the year. Triway QB Luke Starr passed for 346 yards and three TDs in the
win over the Bobcats, while also rushing for 41 yards and a score. Olley Krupp
and Bruin Flinner both topped 100 yards receiving. Defensive lineman Roman
Gilbert led a dominant defense against Norwayne and has 6 tackles for loss
already. The Golden Bears will face a tough test trying to rebound from a
shutout loss as this will be their first road contest. Jayden Hochstetler has
been a two-way bright spot with 72 rushing yards and 10 tackles, including a
sack.
Black River (1-1)
at Smithville (2-0)
Last week: Black River 37, Northwestern 7;
Smithville 27, Claymont 12
Last Year: Did not play
This year: After Northwestern QB Leonardo Guidetti
passed the Huskies to an early 7-0 lead and had them knocking on the door for
more, Black River DB Dom Bell picked off a pass and returned it 92 yards to
propel the Pirates to a 31-7 halftime lead and the win. Bell also had 195 yards
passing and BR forced four turnovers and had 6 sacks. Smithville is bidding to
roll into Wayne County Athletic League play with an unblemished non-league
record. The Smithies hammered out a 27-12 road win at Claymont a week ago behind
140 yards and 3 TDs from RB Mason Haines. Sophomore LB Zach Lanneaux had 10
tackles, blocked a kick and picked off a pass.
Orrville (1-1)
at Canton Cent. Cath. (1-1)
Last week: West Holmes 28, Orrville 0; Mogadore
22, Canton Cent. Cath. 7
Last Year: Orrville 59, Canton C.C. 37
This year:
The
Riders will try to get back on track after a tough loss at West Holmes.
Orrville has lots of balance on offense with RB Parker Hostetler (36-190, 2
TDs), QB Cameron Kraft (343 yards, 4 TD passes) and WR Breylon McDuffie (12
rec., 130 yards, 2 TDs) leading the way. Canton CC was outrushed 262-85 in its
loss to Mogadore. The Riders will need to control the ground game against the
Crusaders.
Norwayne (1-1)
at Garaway (2-0)
Last week: Triway 36, Norwayne 14; Garaway 42, Expression
Prep (W Va) 0
Last Year: Did not play
This year: Norwayne doesn’t lose often in the
regular season, but the Bobcats will have to protect QB Jacob Bruner better
than they did at Triway, as Bruner was flushed from the pocket repeatedly and
completed just 7 of 21 passes for 90 yards. Norwayne also ran for just 73 yards
— 70 on a long TD run by Carson Arnold — and gave up 356 yards passing. The
Pirates, meanwhile, had what amounted to a week off in their easy victory.
Garaway has yet to allow a point and has outscored its 2 opponents 64-0 … in
the first quarter. QB Grady Miller has plenty of weapons, while Trey Miller
burned 57 yards with a punt return for a score a week ago.
OHIO CARDINAL
CONFERENCE
Wooster (0-2)
at New Philadelphia (0-2)
Last week: North Royalton 43, Wooster 13; West
Branch 21, New Philadelphia 13
Last Year: New Philadelphia 28, Wooster 7
This year: The two longtime foes kick off Ohio
Cardinal Conference play a week early. The Quakers fell behind 21-0 against
West Branch before making things interesting. They just took too long to get
things going. A TD pass from Parker Rieger to T.R. Harriman got New
Philadelphia on the board with less than three minutes left. The Quakers
recovered the ensuing onside kick and Rieger connected with C.J. Carlisle to
pull the Quakers within 21-13, bit their extra point was blocked. New
Philadelphia could not recover a second onside kick. Wooster has struggled
early, getting outscored 99-36 in a pair of non-league losses to Orrville and
North Royalton.
