Jennifer Shoman has announced her candidacy as a write-in for Mount Vernon’s Third Ward City Council seat.

A longtime resident and member of a family with over a century of roots in Mount Vernon, Shoman is running to ensure that every resident of the Third Ward feels heard, represented, and respected by local government.

After earning a bachelor's degree in Business Management and Economics from Hope College, Shoman returned to Mount Vernon and purchased her home in the Third Ward in 2010. She has worked at Kenyon College since 2009, beginning her career in the library before transitioning into Information Technology. She cites this professional evolution as evidence of her ability to learn, adapt, and grow into new challenges.

“I know what it is like to stand in front of the city administration and feel unheard,” said Shoman. “That’s why I’m committed to making sure our ward has strong, consistent representation on City Council.”

Shoman has been actively involved in local advocacy, including working on the Edgewood campaign, organizing residents, writing to council members, and speaking at public meetings. She also played a role in the Vernonview resolution by attending and voicing concerns at council sessions. When it became clear that action was needed, she knocked on doors to collect signatures, engage neighbors, and push for change.

Running under the slogan “Shoman — Showing Up for You,” she brings not only passion and experience but also a demonstrated willingness to do the work. Her campaign is focused on increasing transparency, encouraging civic engagement, and ensuring that the Third Ward continues to have a seat at the table.

The election will take place on Nov. 4. As a write-in candidate, Shoman’s name will not appear on the ballot, and voters will need to write her name in for their vote to count.
