MV tennis third at KVCTA invitational
The Mount Vernon girls' tennis team followed the lead of its doubles' teams in finishing third in the 11th annual Kokosing Valley Community Tennis Association' s high school girls tennis team invitational on Aug. 9.
The two Jackets' doubles teams each finished second in the invite, helping the team score 20 points to place third along with Bloom-Carroll. Big Walnut won the eight-team tournament with 27 points, followed by Newark with 21.
Seniors Dede Burcham and Scarlett Turner teamed up to finish as runner-up in the first doubles' division in the tournament hosted by MV at Mount Vernon Nazarene University's' Ramser courts. They advanced to the championship match before succumbing to Big Walnut's Allie Cunningham and Emma Austin, 8-4.
The second doubles' team of senior Zoe Schemrich and sophomore Audrey Rieder also advanced to the championship match before falling. The Jacket duo were also knocked by a Big Walnut tandem – Ella Zielinski and Ella Valenzuela.
In singles' play, senior Natalie Gourley took home the bronze with a third-place showing at second singles. Senior Cameron Carlson placed fifth at first singles, while senior Bella Glorius took home fifth place at third singles.
Mount Vernon also had junior varsity players Nika Glorius, Makayla Davis, Emily Guilliams and Inna Hardnock participate in the invitational.
