After losing a heartbreaker in its opener, the Mount Vernon
football team made sure things were different in week two.
The Yellow Jackets got a pick six on the first play of the
game en route to a 24-7 victory over Newark.
After kicking off to the Wildcats, Landon Dawson snatched Newark
quarterback Bodie Smith’s first pass and returned it 36 yards for the score.
The Jackets never looked back.
Quarterback Mason Richards, who had 73 yards rushing on the night,
opened the offensive scoring with a 24-yard run in the first quarter. Richards
added a five-yard scoring run early in the second to make it 18-0.
After Newark scored to close the gap early in the third
quarter, MV (1-1) put the game away away with another Richards’ rushing TD,
this time from two yards out.
The Jackets controlled the game offensively with a solid
running game. Dawson had 84 yards on 10 carries, followed by Richards’ 73
yards. Jake Hubbard added 35, Luke Mullins 32 and Ben Fitzpatrick 20 as the
Jackets rolled up 244 yards rushing on the night.
Richards was solid with his throwing, as well, completing 7
of 9 passes for 45 yards. Greyson Deem caught two of those passes for 13 yards,
while Bryce Creager had two receptions for nine yards and Hubbard two for
seven.
Defensively, Mullins led the Jackets with seven unassisted
tackles. Dawson and Darrin Monahan both picked off Newark passes.
The defense allowed Newark, which had scored 56 points in its opener, just 119 yards on the night — 55
rushing and 64 through the air.
Sipes leads Freddies to victory
Friday was Blake Sipes’ turn to take over the Fredericktown
football team.
The senior quarterback rushed for 246 yards and three
touchdowns in leading the Freddies to a 34-14 victory over visiting Northridge.
Sipes scored on a runs of 79, 6 and 11 yards. He also added
an eight-yard TD pass to Brode Davis for another score and ran in a two-point
conversion. Sipes completed 3 of 17 passes for 25 yards and the score. Gavin
Toombs caught two of those passes for 17 yards.
Reese Hannan added a 1-yard TD run that opened the scoring
for Fredericktown (2-0). Northridge had scored first after blocking a punt and
returning it 33 yards for the TD.
The Freddies amassed 348 yards rushing on 46 carries on the
night.
Johnnies run past Centerburg
After scoring the opening touchdown, the Centerburg Trojans
could only watch the Ryan Sager and Johnstown Johnnies express run wild on
Friday.
Sager rushed for 280 yards and seven touchdowns as the
Johnnies steamrolled Centerburg, 48-14.
Miles Marshall got the Trojans (1-1) off to a good start,
running for a 12-yard TD midway through the first quarter.
But, Sager got rolling, scoring on runs of 1, 9, 9, 66 and
14 as the Johnnies erupted to a 32-8 lead.
Marshall gave Centerburg fans a thrill with a 48-yard
touchdown run to begin the fourth quarter, but Sager scored two more times
(runs of 4 and 17 yards) to end the threat.
Marshall had what would normally be considered a great
night, rushing for 180 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Trojans. Blane Ball
added 57 yards rushing and connected on 11 of 24 passes for 71 yards. Shawn
Carter had 31 yards rushing.
Hayden Love caught three passes for 31 yards to lead
Centerburg. Jackson Ballinger had three catches for nine yards, Eli Indiciani
had two receptions for 19 yards and Marshall caught two passes for eight yards.
East Knox falls to Bucyrus Wynford
Bucyrus Wynford scored twice in the second half to break
open a tight game with Eastw Knox and beat the Bulldogs, 28-12.
The teams traded touchdowns in the second quarter and first
part of the third. Leading 14-12, the Royals then put the game away with two
scores.
Jax Lester had a solid game for EK (0-2), completing 17 of
34 passes for 217 yards and a touchdown. He was intercepted twice.
Cason Faucett caught four of those passes for 107 yards and
a touchdown. Dakota Cooper also caught four passes for 66 yards, while Logan
Clark had three receptions for 25 yards and Rush Beatty had two for 19.
The Bulldogs couldn’t get anything going on the ground,
though, rushing for just 30 yards as a team. Landon Boyd had 22 of those yards
on seven carries.
Caden Ridenour led the EK defense with 21 tackles and forced
a fumble. Beatty had 12 tackles, while Boyd had 10, and Logan Hercenberg and
Ray Arnold each had eight. Gavin Warth intercepted a pass.
