As a parent of two children in Wooster City Schools and a proud graduate of this district, I care deeply about our community and its future. I understand why some people are hesitant about the upcoming bond issue. We are living in uncertain times. Costs are rising, and decisions about historic buildings like Cornerstone are difficult.
But in times of uncertainty, we should focus on what we know to be true. We know students learn best in safe and comfortable spaces. We know strong schools protect property values and attract new families and businesses. And we know investing in education strengthens a community for generations.
This bond issue will fund a new middle school while allowing the district to take the aging Cornerstone building offline and avoid millions in costly and likely temporary repairs. This plan allows for the possibility of a new use for Cornerstone through the Wooster Growth Corporation. It is a responsible plan that meets Wooster’s educational needs and prepares our community for the future.
There will always be uncertainty in the world. But I am certain of this: Investing in our kids is the right choice. Waiting will only cost more, both in dollars and in missed opportunities for students.
When times feel uncertain, the best thing a community can do is come together and invest in what matters most. I’m asking you to consider voting yes on May 6 because our students, teachers and community are worth it.
