Hiland baseball clinches IVC South title
The Hawks rolled through four wins while Clay Lehman and Quinn Mullet earned a district berth in boys tennis
The Hiland baseball team clinched the outright Inter-Valley Conference South Division title with a 12-0, five-inning win over Sandy Valley May 11.
Gerut Monigold went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs to lead the Hawks. Michael Miller and Andre Yoder both had two hits and scored twice. Logan Yoder and Isaiah Wagler both scored twice. Paxton Alarcon drove in two runs.
Andre Yoder tossed a one-hitter to earn the win on the mound, striking out one and walking one.
Hiland picked up a 13-2, five-inning win over Indian Creek in nonleague action May 9.
Grady Monigold went 4-for-4 with two doubles, a home run, four RBIs and three runs scored to lead the Hawks. Jonah Yoder (two runs scored), Miller (two triples, three RBIs) and Wagler (two RBIs) all added two hits. Griffin Monigold scored twice.
Miller also earned the win on the mound, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits over 4 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts and three walks.
Hiland downed Green 9-0 in a nonconference clash May 8.
Grady Monigold went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, two runs scored and a home run to pace the Hawks. Andre Yoder also had three hits and knocked in two runs. Christian Mullet had two hits and scored twice, Gerut Monigold scored twice, and Griffin Monigold drove in two runs.
Gerut Monigold also picked up the win on the mound, allowing three hits over five scoreless innings while striking out three and walking one.
Hiland rolled to a 10-0, five-inning win over Tusky Valley in IVC play May 6.
Griffin Monigold went 3-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Hawks. Grady Monigold (two runs scored) and Jonah Yoder both drove in two runs. Wagler tripled and scored twice. Gerut Monigold scored three runs and walked twice. Mullet scored twice.
Grady Monigold also went the distance to earn the win on the mound, allowing five hits over five scoreless innings with nine strikeouts and a walk.
Boys tennis
Hiland competed at the Division II Dover Sectional May 11.
The doubles team of Clay Lehman and Quinn Mullet advanced to districts for the Hawks. The duo opened the tourney with a 6-1, 6-4 win, then picked up a 7-6, 7-6 win to lock up a spot at districts and reach the semifinals.
Softball
Hiland's Jalyn Immel got hot down the stretch, fashioning a strong hitting streak that included an impressive 8-for-15 stretch. Immel was instrumental in helping Hiland gain ground on improving its program this season.
The Lady Hawks played well in their opening tournament game, battling hard before succumbing to defending Div. VI state runner-up Garaway 13-5.
