The 2024 Holmes County Chamber Medium Business of the Year honor went to Tekton Engineering, and the Berlin company has added plenty of exciting, innovative and stunning architecture to the Holmes County landscape.
Tekton Engineering started in June, 2014, so for the past decade Tekton has blossomed into a company that has helped Holmes County grow in some incredible ways.
“Growing up here, going to school here, building relationships, I didn’t really realize how important being a part of this community was,” Tekton president and owner Robert Miller said. “The community always gives you the opportunity because we care for one another, but it’s our responsibility once we receive that opportunity to follow through and earn their trust. I think I’ve been blessed to learn a lot of great values from a lot of wonderful people here.””
Miller said his time living in Columbus helped him recognize the true value of being part of the Holmes County fabric and rural life, and that part of the lesson he learned was surrounding himself with quality people. He said in meeting with Bruce Hamsher from Toward the Goal Ministries that character and work ethic are things that can’t be taught.
“I have kept all of the names of everyone who has worked here, only as a reminder that they were people who had an influence in my life,” Miller said. “They are all part of the path that has shaped who we are as a company.”
Chamber award presenter Tom Jeffries of sponsor Rea & Associates said Tekton is a fitting name since it is a title for the group of carpenters, woodworkers, and builders.
Jeffries said that not only is Tekton responsible for many beautiful pieces of architecture that have helped shape the Holmes County skyline, but the business is also heavily involved in community, with an emphasis on faith.
“The company’s principles are serve with integrity, lead with humility communicate intentionally and develop consistently,” Jeffries said. “Those are practiced at all levels of the business and reflect their support of local education, building Holmes County’s quality of life and a desire to see businesses in the area thrive.”
Jefferies went on to say that Miller and his company’s people provide an excellent example of innovation, collaboration and servanthood leadership.
Tekton began in 2014, when Miller expressed the desire to work with his father. Having grown up in the construction world, Miller said he was eager to step into a new world of architecture.
Tekton is a full-service engineering firm specializing in commercial, civil and residential projects, also providing 3D visualization and creative interior design. The company’s willingness to tailor-make designed to meet specific needs and the innovation and creativity of the firm have created some of Holmes County’s most inspiring structures, including the newly completed Holmes County Health District building, as well as designing the new East Holmes Central School main office and bus garage, the new facility of First Knox National Bank in Mt. Hope, and many more.
Miller expressed his gratitude to the many people who have helped prepare him to take on this exciting role in the community during the annual chamber award banquet, noting that the success has come from the effort of many people.
Miller said that with the advancements in artificial intelligence, new and exciting gains in technology will allow Tekton to accomplish even bigger, better and more innovative architecture.
Miller said one other advantage that Tekton has had over the years is a unique one to this community.
He said many of his dad’s competing construction companies have been willing to work alongside them, noting that the community’s willingness to work together to make the county better as a whole is a gift that shouldn’t ever be taken for granted.
“I don’t think you see that too often in other communities,” Miller said.
For Tekton Engineering, the value of walking with clients from the initial meeting through the taking care of the final detail is at the forefront of what Miller said was the ultimate goal of creating something special that is exactly what each client desires, as he and his company work to understand that every project is unique, every client has a wish list and meeting those goals, hopes and vision is the best way to serve the community.
