Lorson gives talk to Northwestern Ruritans

The Northwestern Ruritan Club met for its monthly dinner/meeting on Monday, July 14 at The Barn.

President Jamie Bowman called the meeting to order and welcomed members and guests. The group joined in singing “America,” and the invocation was given by Jim Johnson.

The program was given by John Lorson of the Wayne County Soil Conservation Service, who spoke on Ohio’s Wildlife, Skins and Skulls. He talked about the natural history of Ohio’s mammals and showed many animal skins (hides) and skulls. Many animals in the area have become almost extinct, with some coming back, such as the American eagle. The relationship between different species was mentioned. He pointed out the size of the brain cavity in different skulls, which would relate to the animal’s intelligence.

Treasurer Chuck Beck’s report was approved subject to audit. Thank-you notes were received from Sydney McConahay for her scholarship, the West Salem Messenger for the club’s donation and riders in the West Salem Bicycle Race. Beck said all packages have been sent for the summer Huskie Brigade to soldiers from the area. Beck also reported appreciation for the help with the Route 301 roadside trash pickup in June. The next pickup will be Aug. 12 at 9 a.m. at the middle school.

Bowman reported the next Parade of Flags will be put out for Patriot Day on Sept. 11.

Dick Wiley said the West Salem Bicycle Race on July 12 went well with good weather. There were 46 racers from all over, with some from neighboring states. He appreciated club members’ help with directing traffic and more.

A motion was passed that the club donate money to Christine Dotson, who lives in the Northwestern School District and lost much in a home fire. Pastor Paul Bartholomew suggested the club donate to Dotson.

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned with the Pledge of Allegiance.

The next dinner/meeting will be Monday, Aug. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at Northwestern High School. The program will be presented by the business, professions and finance committee, chaired by Wiley. The directors will meet at 6 p.m. in the library.
